I bought this adapter fully aware of its limitations, so I wasn't disappointed (more on that later). It's massively improved the network performance of my Dell Inspiron 1750, which only has a 10/100 network adapter built in. It worked perfectly first time with the supplied Windows drivers, and after some googling I also managed to get it working on Ubuntu 11.10. Full and easy to understand instructions were found at [...]
From my limited testing so far, performance seems to be much better in Windows 7 than in Ubuntu. Maybe operator error, but definitely noticeable.
Back to the marketing: it's not just devious, it's a flat out lie. The box states "Add Gigabit Ethernet Speed to any USB 2.0 compatible desktop or laptop". There isn't even any small print to let you know that this item's full performance in the real world is restricted by the USB 2.0 interface, which has a theoretical maximum of 480 Mbit/s, i.e. just under HALF the maximum of gigabit ethernet's 1000 Mbit/s.
So buy this item if you have a gigabit network and want to make a significant improvement to a computer with a 10/100 adapter, but don't expect anything like gigabit performance.
It's like selling a car that'll go 300mph, without telling people the wheels will fall off at 150. ;-)
I would have given it 5 stars, but I've taken one off because of the misleading marketing which will no doubt cause a few disappointed customers. Amazon should amend the product description too.
