Eric Twiname's classic book has been out of print for 24 years, but you seldom see one on ebay as owners rarely cast their copy aside for a modern text. The 3rd edition has been modified to bring the rules up-to-date, but the main body of the text truly is as relevant today as it was in 1973. The most delightful aspect of the new edition is that it retains the original photographs inside. I began to flick through the book as soon as I noticed, smiling at the sight of a stripy Optimist sail, a sliding seat, Lasers with 4-digit sail numbers....and oh, the clothing!
Once you settle down to read, Twiname forces you to admit that your boat isn't failing to win races; you are. He explains logically, and gets you wholly committed to the next chapters. His apparently simple method of prioritising is radical compared to the aspects of racing most of us focus on, but the truth is straightforward. Twiname shows you how to apply it and train yourself.
The text states these basic facts that seem so obvious we wonder why we didn't think of them before! Yet we don't, and this book is thus gold dust. Even its chapter headings ooze wisdom; instead of a flippant "Getting the best start", Twiname examines "Taking chance out of starting".
One tip that will stay with me for life, is the best method for breaking free of a covering boat if that helm has weak trouser elastic! Even Twiname's humour is good advice.
