3.0 out of 5 stars A good starting point, 15 Nov 2001
By Ed "dredd01" (Yorkshire UK) - See all my reviews
'Start to Sign' is endorsed by the RNID, and contains clear examples of most common BSL signing terms. Many BSL signs are colloquial in nature (signing something in Leeds might mean nothing at all to someone in Manchester) but this book carries the most commonly understood terms too. You can't learn sign language from a book, but at least this one has stopped me making so many notes in the sign language lesson - notes that are usually completely meaningless next morning!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for revision, 4 Jan 2005
By Rin "Rin" (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Start to Sign! (Paperback)
The book itself is very organised and has a lot of content; several pages of index at the back provide easy access to a specific word you need. And there are a fair amount of words here. Unfortunately that is all there are...words.

Nothing about sentence structure, just the basic words such as colours, days of the week, clothing. At the back there is also the finger-spelled alphabet and numbers.

To it's merit there are a lot of photo's to show you exactly how to perform each sign; but without an instructor it is a challenge to get it right. For the simpler words, however that do not involve movement of the hands, the book cannot be faulted.

This book works well if you're taking lessons, and the course I'm taking actually recommended this particuarlar book. Though throughout my group we've all felt it's a little hard to just look at pictures to see what's happening. Though it's invaluable for looking through after a lesson, as it refreshes the mind on signs.

To be fair, I don't see how a book could show signs any better; so for what it is it's virtually perfect. But to truly grasp sign language you need to be shown the signs. This is great for revising from as I've said, so that's why I'm giving it four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Photo Dictionary., 28 Feb 2004
This book is basically a photo dictionary of all the signs you will need as a new learner of British Sign Language. The introductory chapter gives an overview of BSL and how to use the book, but it really needs to accompany classes or other teaching of sign language as the book on its own cannot show how to put sentences together or have conversations in sign language.
