4.0 out of 5 stars Good, clear, concise instructions, 26 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business (Start & Run a Business) (Paperback)
Since buying this book I have started my own cleaning company which after 6 months is still growing steadily. I found Susan's book very helpful in setting up the company, particularly the pre-formatted forms for everything from pricing individual jobs to employee training certificates (a CD Rom with the typed forms is included). This book will help you if you want to work on your own or if you intend to hire staff. The only limitation was that it was Canadian based, although the adivce could be applied to any country.

It assumes you have no previous business experience and supplies all the basic marketing and business process information. Although I do have previous experience I still found the book invaluable in the creation of a dedicated cleaning company. I found it especially helpful in the area of price setting and cleaning fundamentals, including tips on actual cleaning methodology.

Susan takes you from 'What do you actually want from a Cleaning Business' through 'Cleaning Techniques' to 'Customer Servicing'. A good all round support book.

I am shortly opening a Cleaning Business and have been busy doing all the groundwork first.
This book is simply brilliant. It covers all areas and some you would never have thought of if you havent run a business before.
It took me ages to read as at each chapter I felt compelled to put into practice what was being taught. It also meant that when I had to complete a Business Plan, I was able to do so thanks to this book. It also has a master Cash Flow Forcast on the CD which seemed complicated at first but really wasnt and put in black and white it showed how potentially successful my company should be!
Also when I went to my local Chamber of Commerce for business support, they were really impressed at how much work I had done.
The forms on the disc are for the most part very helpful. I have been able to alter them where necessary to meet my requirements.
Well worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written - Very Helpful, 5 Sep 2006
By M. Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business (Start & Run a Business) (Paperback)
This book is very well written and an excellent guide if the reader is looking to build a successful, profitable home cleaning business. Susan Bewsey does a good job of outlining the steps you need to take to get this business off the ground, and to maintain the business. She also gives a good general idea of what all the business involves. As far as holding your hand to go get the license, bonding and insurance...no, she doesn't do that. But she does tell you what you need, and where and who to check with to obtain them, and to get more information on them. After all, different country's, states, and even city's requirements differ. If you're going to make it in a business of your own, you need to be able to do some things for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 21 May 2005
By A. Combs - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business (Start & Run a Business) (Paperback)
The book is so basic - no details. For example, you would think it would go into the details of insurance - what the difference is between bonding and liability insurance and advise you as to which you need, and where to go for this, and how much to expect it to cost. Instead the book only says, "This Insurance is important protection" and will "offset the costs of major damages". Same with Licenses. It tells you that you need one - offers no advice as to how to go about getting one, if there are fees, etc. - zero details at all. I was very disappointed in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, 8 Mar 2007
By Elayne - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business (Start & Run a Business) (Paperback)
I've read and re-read Bewsey's book, Start and Run a Home Cleaning Business and she's done a fabulous job. There are lots of ideas for people generally in business for themselves working out of their homes. She has great goal-setting questions and really tries to focus the reader on thinking, not just about cleaning homes, but providing a service that clients will call upon again and again. Bewsey has wonderful customer service ideas, marketing and pricing your service. She's done a great job and this book has already become a very usable resource.
