Great return 25 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
Europe return with a great cd! Not really like the 80's big hair, big guitar days. But if it WAS like those old albums, it would sound dated and like a sad attempt to regain old glories. This cd has a heavier sound as other reviews have stated. But whilst the big pop/rock vocal lines aren't here with their parpy keyboard accompaniment, what you get are plenty of great ROCK melodies, with a harder, rockier backing. Joey Tempest has a great voice - amazing. I'm personally glad Norum is back, as he is just incredible. The rhythm section Leven, Michaeli and Houghland are as solid and reliable as ever. This is a great band with an album of great songs. These guys are just so polished and professional, and have come up with an album that, although won't satisfy those expecting Final Countdown 2004, will impress and satisfy those wanting to see what Europe sound like NOW. This cd represents the return of a class act, not the sad attempt to relive what once was. Buy it and see!

Wow! This album just sounds so fresh and full of energy. Anyone who enjoyed the solo outings of Messrs Norum and Tempest will find the best of both worlds intertwined with a contemporary rock sound. My biggest fear for this album was that it would be a pale copy of past glories but this album stands up there with today's cutting edge rock bands.

As usual the musicianship is exemplary although keyboardist Mic Michaeli is almost inaudible on some of the heavier tracks. Indeed this album is a full on guitar album and I think it's probably the band's heaviest album to date; the intense riffage on 'Song #12' showing they mean business. Even so, there are lighter moments such as the tongue in cheek 'Sucker' and, of course, the softer side of the band in the shape of 'Hero' and 'Settle For Love'.

If you liked the band for their softer moments then you may want to check the sound bites before buying. For me though, it's a classic rock album from start to finish...

"Start from the Dark" is Europe's first new album in over ten years and it's just as good, if not better as their old stuff, it's a great hard rock album. There are some amazing songs here on this CD and it is fantastic to see that the band are finally back in action. All of Europe's fans should enjoy this new album even though the sound is much heavier than before.
