Reading through Bill's book has been a Kindle page-clicking joy! His experience speaks for itself and he relates to the reader as if he is chatting with him or her over coffee in his or her living room. It's a wonderful VO business book that definitely needed to be written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good information for aspiring VO talent 8 Nov 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First, realize that as the author states, this is a transcript of a podcast or webinar or something to that affect. This is not a professional level, edited, ebook; HOWEVER, the content is VERY good. I actually struggled to put it down and to some extent enjoyed the transcripty style. It seemed to retain a more personal feel (like Bills videos) than your standard "how to" book.

This kindle covers a lot of ground relative to breaking into VO. Bill uses his experience to help guide prospective VO talent down a winning path to their own business. I learned something in every section that will help me a great deal. There were a couple work flow tips that will save me 100's of times the cost of this kindle.

What I like most is that Bill Dewees really does a good job of sort of engraving in your mind whats required to be successful in VO. He makes it clear; no magic, no short cuts, lots of work, and a great career if you can be persistent.

Sections include:
office tools
union vs non-union
customer service
and more

If you are aspiring to break into VO or are a VO talent that is finding that you are not growing your business then this kindle is a great place to start.

TLDR: Fast, easy read, with LOTS of great information about success in Voice Over work. Numerous typos and transcript style. Worth every penny.

Book Review
How to Start and Build a 6 Figure
Voice Over Business
By Bill DeWees
David E. McClendon Sr.

By now, I have read thousands of books on how to start and run various types of business. Often authors will send me copies of their books before release for me to review for them. Sometimes they are great. Some of these have been real turkeys.

Bill DeWees hits the nail on the head with his book How to Start and Build a 6 Figure Voice Over Business.

DeWees is an MBA like me. He knows the vocabulary of the business world, but he does not overwhelm his readers with a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo jargon.

Many authors try to impress their readers with how much jargon they can throw into a book. Bill DeWees does not do that.

Instead, he writes a clear, concise book about not only how to locate jobs, but also how to manage the day-to-day marketing tasks of how to start your voice over business.

I am not a voice over talent. I am not seeking to be one.

However, my two daughters are. I purchased this book to gain a little insight into the industry so that I could help them manage their business.

There are points where DeWees repeats himself in this book. He tells us at least twice about how to make a click on the recording when a mistake is made so it can easily be found to edit it. This is not a real problem. I have read books where the author repeats quite a few things just to get a few more pages into the book. I do not think this is the case.

In this book, the reader will learn a few tricks of the trade and some common mistakes that beginners make. DeWees also tells his readers why some very well-known voice over talent is not making as much as they should out of the voice over business.

In my opinion, Joe Girard;s book How to Sell Yourself should be read along with this book. I think with the two a person who is wishing to market their voice over business will learn most of what they need to know about marketing themselves.

I would like to have read a little more about the proper type of microphones and other equipment. Over all, though, I have to rate this book as an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill - Tells It Like It Is 10 April 2013
By Tim - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I received Bill's book yesterday and didn't put it down until I finished. If you are thinking about being a VO communicator or you are already in the business,This IS The Book for you!
It's only 134 pages and it's Bill explaining to you what you need to do, to be successful in the Voice Over Business.
It's Not full of technical jargon, it's NOT a get-rich-quick book and there's no fluff. It's any easy step by step business plan that is The Recipe for successs. Being new to the industry I had little knowledge about it but, now I know it's not about 'the tip of the iceberg' but what's below it that counts.
Bill shows you what he does and all you have to do is dedicate yourself to the plan. Rinse and Repeat.
I highly recommend "How to Start and Build a SIX FIGURE Voice Over Business: Set Your VO Career on Fire!"

2.0 out of 5 stars This book should be $1.99 at the most! Very Misleading. From one Voice Over Artist to another. 4 Dec 2013
By jmacc213 - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is extremley vague and simplistic to the point that many times you'll find yourself asking yourself: "I know this already, and so would the average person!" This book cost me $12.99, plus shipping and handling was about $3-4. With that, I would expect it's inward content to be worth at least $9-$10 yet, it's only about $2.00.

I actually like the way that Bill writes (although you can Definetly tell he is no writer). Yet Bill NEVER tells you what recipe worked for him. Instead, he keeps dropping scenario after scenario of: "Hey, I'm making money and lot's of it." "Here's what I'll tell you about how I sort of got there, but I won't give you directions."

As a Voice Over Artist who is doing well himself, I purchased this book for full price in order to help in giving back to a fellow VO artist. My advice: Get this book from the library! Borrow it from a friend, or at least read it in the store (it's not a hefty read at all which for the price is also very misleading) but, DO NOT PAY for it by any means! You can find all of it's source material and tips by simply Googling or Binging "VO marketing tips". Definetly $13! That's just craziness. Bill should Definetly not charge as much as he does for this book. Simply not cool.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! Very general information - no specifics. 8 April 2014
By Todd Jennette - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am an aspiring voiceover artist and I bought this book to help me find new ways to promote and build my business. When I first started reading this book, there were several red flags that caused me to question the legitimacy. One, it is self-published. Two, it has too many grammatical and sentence structure errors that made reading clunky at times. This book needed to be sent to a editor/proofreader before being released. Three, the author is constantly proclaiming how successful he has been, but rarely gives full details about how he did things. In one example, he says he uses Craig' to get voiceover work, but he never tells what he did on the website. Four, there were several examples in the book where the author openly made claims about something, but admitted that he couldn't find any statistics or facts to support his claims. You would expect that a successful voice actor with his experience would speak consistently with a level of authoritativeness. But too often he uses ambiguous language that makes him sound unconfident. This book is more a tribute to his success than giving step by step instructions on how to replicate his success. Page 37 is almost entirely dedicated to promoting his website. If I were to sum up this book, it is a promotional tool for his business. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
