Book Description

Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon is an anthology by authors from both science and fiction writing backgrounds, illustrating some of the tech and ideology behind the illustrious goal of traveling to another star within the next century. Edited by Gregory Benford, New York Times bestselling science fiction author, and James Benford, leading expert on space propulsion, Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon includes science fiction by Neal Stephenson, David Brin, Joe Haldeman, Nancy Kress, Stephen Baxter, Gregory Benford, John Cramer, Richard A. Lovett, and Allen Steele, as well as scientific articles by Stephen Hawking, Freeman Dyson, Robert Zubrin, Peter Schwartz, Martin Rees, Ian Crawford, James Benford, Geoffrey Landis, Paul Davies and Adam Crowl.

This groundbreaking anthology of science and science fiction is based on findings and discussions of the 100-Year Starship Symposium held in 2011. In it, top scientists tackle the opportunities for our long-term future in space. Alongside them, science fiction authors explore the dream and the possibilities.

About the Editors:
Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon is edited by James Benford, leading expert on space propulsion, and Gregory Benford, New York Times Bestselling author of science fiction. Brothers and fellow scientists, in addition to serving as editors, both Benfords are represented in the anthology, alongside other leading scientists and writers, James Benford with “Sailships” and Gregory Benford with “Coda: Atmosphoera Incognita” and “The Man Who Sold the Stars”.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Collection for sci fi lovers and authors 24 Sept. 2013
By Suzanna Stinnett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I only wish there were five more volumes of this essential collection of voices. For sci fi authors, enough intelligent speculation to fuel volumes of imaginative futures. For astronomy lovers and the science-curious, a book to read and re-read. For those wondering about our potential for space travel, buckle your seat belt. Written in a variety of tones and academic levels. What a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visionary thinking! 19 Feb. 2014
By Richard Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very nice mix of serious technical and philosophical discussions vis a vis humankind's role beyond this planet and science fiction stories that weave many of these themes together. Highly recommended if you like space exploration and research and/or hard science fiction. One of the stories features Carl, who appears to be a metaphor for Jeff Bezos and his 10000 year clock. Perhaps the most important thing I came away with is that humans will not realize our full potential until we are able do projects on timescales much longer than a human lifetime and star travel goes far beyond just the symbolism of the 10000 year clock.

A surprisingly diverse and far-reaching summary of the latest thinking on starships. Mixing science essays with appropriate science fiction short stories is a great idea. My only complaint is that the illustrations are hard to read (too small) in the Kindle edition. This is an inherent weakness of the B&W Kindles' electronic "ink", but it could have been mitigated. In converting from the paper edition they could have made the effort to rotate & enlarge the illustrations to allow them to fill the Kindle page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fire the Imagination of Starflight !!! 31 May 2014
By William Gary Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For those of us baby boomers who grew up with the space program of the 60s and were awed at mankind's landings on the moon, and who have lived in despair for decades, this look ahead from space visionaries like Greg Benford and others returns me to the optimism that I felt during those first heady days of space flight. This book is a compilation of factual and fictional looks ahead at the possiblities of both solar system and interstellar space travel. While not glossing over the difficulties faced with the vast distances to the stars, there nevertheless is a sense of wonder at the possiblities of workholes and other possible physical phenomena that may propel mankind to the next level - freedom from our current home on mother Earth !! I highly recommend this book to anyone of my generation, and especially younger space travel enthusiasts, to fire the imagintation once again !!!

Interested in the hard tech and science of starship flight? This is for you. Interested in fiction by well known and respected authors probing our next 100 years or so of spaceflight? This is for you. In short, if you are interested at all in humankind escaping the bounds of Earth, this is for you.
