Product Description

Now two individuals from opposite ends of settled space are on a collision course with the darkest of those secrets, even as the world threatens to explode around them.

The year is 2322. Humanity has expanded into the stars, inhabiting over 100 worlds across a third of the galaxy. Though thriving as never before, they have discovered neither alien life nor the key to utopia. Earth struggles to retain authority over far-flung planets and free-wheeling corporations while an uneasy armistice with a breakaway federation hangs by a thread as the former rebels rise in wealth and power.

Alexis Solovy is Earth Alliance royalty, her father a fallen war hero and her mother an influential military leader. But she seeks only the freedom of space and has made a fortune by reading the patterns in the chaos to discover the hidden wonders of the stars.

Nothing about her latest objective suggests the secret it conceals will turn her life-- not to mention the entire galaxy--upside down. But a chance encounter with a mysterious spy leads to a discovery which will thrust Alex into the middle of a galactic power struggle and a sinister conspiracy, whether she likes it or not.

More About the Author

G. S. Jennsen is a science fiction and speculative fiction author, as well as a futurist, digital artist, geek, gamer and editor.

When she was 2, she informed her parents she would be learning to read now. When she was 4, she brought dinner-table conversation to a screeching halt by inquiring as to what they knew about the nature of infinity. The rest is, as they say, history. A long, convoluted history which wound across the U.S. and back again--and back again--through a shocking variety of windowless libraries, windowless corporate boardrooms and windowless engineering labs. She has been a corporate attorney, software developer and editor.

She lives in Colorado with her husband, who works as an electrical engineer, and their two furry, 4-legged children, Dagny and Kaylee. There are many windows in her home, half of which look out on the Rocky Mountains.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books in a long time 12 May 2014
By Hayley
Format:Kindle Edition
This is only the 2nd science fiction book I've read so I don't have much to compare it to but I really loved reading it. The author has built a fantastic galaxy of places and worlds that feel real, and I like that fact that it even after all those years exploring space humanity still finds itself alone and the consequences of that.

The story with all the political intrigue and great characters had me hooked from the beginning. In fact this is the first book I've read in a long time where I've immediately wanted to go back and reread it upon finishing! I found it really well written and I love the main characters' internal monologues, especially Alex who had me smiling to myself in amusement more than once. The dialogue flows well and I liked the flashbacks and how they're used to see the characters in other lights. Yes the romance might be a bit predictable (although I'm soppy, I like that kind of thing) but there were plenty of twists to keep the pages turning and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next two books.

The only issue I had was it did take me a while to work out who all the minor characters were. Especially some of the politicians and which side they were on when you read about them in one chapter and then they don't pop up again for a while. Although this didn't detract from the story too much and by about 1/3 of the way through I had it mostly sorted in my head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful debut novel 24 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
A genuinely enjoyable page-turner full of political intrigue, interesting characters, and the start of what promises to be a fantastic trilogy.

Anyone with a penchant for a well-crafted, non-cliched sci-if plot will love Starshine; it's a beautifully-paced read and absolutely leaves you wanting more. I will be waiting impatiently for book 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to spend your time! 1 April 2014

About me - I am an avid reader of most types of fiction. My standards are high – I have no patience for poorly written and/or poorly plotted work. Additionally, I enjoy books that are thought provoking and that engage my brain and/or my heart.

That said, I enjoyed this book. It is well written and well plotted. It is a big story (this is part 1 of 3) and each of the pieces within the story fit together. This book flows, weaving together multiple story lines successfully to create a future universe on the edge of overwhelming challenges. The characters are well drawn and engaging.

I have no problem giving this book 5 stars – it is well worth your time.

A new writer for me, but what a promise for the future this is; I'm looking forward to her new books!

A storyline with intricate detail. The combination of plenty of space- and planetbound exitement and well thought though characters (way above average in the genre) makes it one of the best books I read n recent years!

5.0 out of 5 stars I think I just found another favorite... 25 April 2014

I'm from western Nebraska and there isn't much to do there for a sci-fi nerd but read, work, and drink. I read a lot. Around 600 or so pages a day, average. Primarily SciFi but sometimes other genres as well. This one had me so enthralled I snuck my kindle into the office so I wouldn't have to wait til after work to read more. I can confidently say this book was awesome, and I am jonesing for the next book in the series.

Thank you, Miss Jennsen, and keep cranking them out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable, intelligently written sci-fi! 9 April 2014

This is an absolute gem of a debut novel and I can't help but be highly impressed by it. Though it doesn't take a lot to make me happy with an inexpensive Kindle purchase, I can honestly say that I've read good books from major publishers that couldn't match this one's poise and polish. Romance, intrigue, a bit of space opera... all of the ingredients of a great story are there in healthy quantities. Naturally, this book kept me reading, even though I had to steal all kinds of time to do it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the genre and I'm personally eager to read the next installment.

This work shows that Jennsen is still developing her art, but there are long stretches of some of the very best fiction I have ever read. The interplay between the two main characters was superb. Here is hoping for a long and productive career. Way to go girl, you have hit a grand slam at your first at bat!
