For me, this book brought back many fmemories both good and bad of travelling on the "Starlight Specials" to both Glasgow and Edinburgh for family holidays in the 1950's.

The chapters dealing with the coaching stock and refreshments served from Brake Vans were vivid reminders of the long overnight journey in crowded fully-lit compartments which seemed endless because we were unable to sleep. I seem to remember that on one journey the Buffet Car had run out of supplies of Soft Drinks and water, and by the time we reached Glasgow we were dying of thirst!

However, this was soon forgotten when dawn arrived and we were able to view the Scottish countryside from the carriage window. I remember on one occassion that we made an early morning walk from St Enoch's Station to Buchanan Street to catch the train to our holiday destination - Stirling, which was refreshing to an eleven year-old after enduring ten-hours on the "Special." It was also exciting to see the Glasgow trams!

Dave Peel and the publishers are to be congratulated on producing such a carefully and well researched book which describes in great detail what can only be described as a long forgotten rail service as far as many are concerned.

I thoroughly recommmend it!

A fascinating study of a bold British Railways experiment to compete with Anglo-Scottish bus services before motorway and aircraft competition and BR's own mismanagement eclipsed it.
Lots of detail of locomotive workings, rolling stock allocation. Well researched and well presented.
Andrew Lloyd Webber was not the inspiration for the trains' titles, but maybe Sir Edward Elgar could claim posthumous credit.

An interesting publication of a little known railway marketing and operational business model of the 1950's.
