A superbly cinematographed, if thinly scripted adventure, set in rural Otago during the 1930's. It centers on a young and determined Kate (Robson) who runs away from her aunt and uncle to find her father in Wellingon. By chance, she meets up with Patrick (Phelps), a World War I veteran, on the run after attacking a repossession man. They become reluctant traveling companions, each using the other as a cover to elude the law. Meant for a young audience, this "family film" makes for a enjoyable watch. "The Wizard" has a part as the Swaggie, early on in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favourite films! 9 Feb 2014
By Mr. N. Morgan VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I fell in love with this film the first time I saw it on TV in 1991. Starlight Hotel is a touching, heartwarming film which has a certain refreshing innocence to it.

Great storyline, superb photography, breathtaking landscapes & skies, with a haunting, ethereal and enhancing soundtrack... what more could you want?

Just the film to watch after a tiring & depressing day at work. Let the film lift you up & make you feel "well, perhaps life and the world aren't so bad after all!" - and do so in a non-syrupy, non-sanctimonious way and refreshing way.

Not QUITE a 100% happy ending, but close enough and fitting enough to comply with the storyline.

Based on a book called The Dream Mongers apparently.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely film 30 Oct 2013

Wow I am so happy that I have finally been able to purchase this film on DVD! It made a huge impression on me as a child I watched it only once years ago and have always remembered it. At last I've been able to watch it again and it is a really lovely and moving film which brought back lovely memories of watching it with my Mum many years ago.If you like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid you will love this and if you don't shed a tear at the end you must have a heart of stone. Brilliant and touching film with the lovely Peter Phelps who does look like a young Paul Newman. So happy to have found this DVD after years of trying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Low budget but effective. 20 Aug 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film I saw years ago when I was a kid. I've been looking for a copy ever since. It's a simple concept and script with not much dialogue yet it's so effective and moving. It demonstrated the hardships of the time without being documentary and yet you still get a full picture and idea of what it may have been like.
I sense there were a lot of historical anomalies in this film as at time we seemed to slip back into the 80s and it could have been difficult to tell what day this was meant to be set in, sometimes that was because of costume or sets ,but I guess we have to remember this film was made on a very small budget yet it seemed to work ok with what it had.
I did feel some things were not explained that well although I sense this was deliberate as the director seemed to want to create a story with as few words as possible. Often it worked. But at times it failed and seemed to leave parts of the story open to interpretation as you weren't always sure what was going on or the motivations of what was happening or why the characters have chosen to react in that way. I felt there could have been explained with simple dialogue or even flashbacks into their pasts. Sometimes the script was for lack of a better word simplified or lazy. They seemed to cut short scenes with action in and drag out the scenes with hardly anything happening. But this could just be because i'm used to watching films with more complex dialogues and story lines. So it may have seemed a little empty the second time around. As a child It was easy for me to understand and maybe what was the idea.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally 6 Mar 2013
I really like this movie. I have waited for 20 years for it to be released on DVD. Unfortunately, this is obviously a direct transfer from VHS to DVD. The picture quality is not what I wanted. The movie gets 5 stars, the DVD much less. In an age of being spoiled by blu-ray quality it is hard to wait so long for something and get less than I wanted. But I guess this is better than nothing.
If you have seen this movie and love it like I do, then buy it. It may be all we get in our lifetime.
