I do wish ALW wouldn't keep on changing Starlight Express but I suppose he wants people to see it again and again. Well, I saw it 7 times over several years, but that was in the early days. I just don't feel enthused to see it again because of all the changes. I particularly dislike the child as Control. I know this is supposed to have been a train set originally, but it wasn't presented like that originally, it was presented as petulant young (and one or two older) adults involved in a ruthless contest. Now I think that's what we all find exciting. I think it was the last time I saw the show that impressive Control had disappeared and instead there was some little kid doing the part and it sounded plain silly. Also some of the "trains" had become more childish. The wonderful original sequence with the older couple had somehow been completely destroyed, I forget what had changed but it no longer worked. I came to the conclusion ALW had decided he only wanted an audience of very young children, preferably boys, and the parents would have to be satisfied with the bright lights and wonderful music.
For those who never saw early presentations, I expect they are thrilled enough with what they see and not that many people are roller skaters. However, we are all experienced ice skaters and the skating is not "astonishing" to us as we know exactly how they do it. The first time we saw this show, the skaters were fantastic, and the races were really dramatic, the romances were realistic, these were "real people", and we sitting at the back of the stalls (where we almost always sat in future visits for good reason) were right by the skaters as they hurtled by. Some people like it and some people dont, because they have messed about with it to get it up to date. With me being a roller skater, I absolutely love it. Shame they cant re-release it with the new song "I do" on it, from 2012 national tour, which ALW's son composed. But you cant have everything. Great price too Amazon. :)

I was lucky enough to be able to go and see this show in the west end. This is quite simply a wonderful cast recording. Treats to look forward to on this recording are.

I have the origianl soundtack for this musical, but when i got this, this is what i remember the musical to be like! Its not as good as the original, but i think it is more up to date for the times that it was released! They need to focus on the quality of the music, but its still just as good!

If anyone likes Starlight Express then this is the cd to buy. I just wish that they would bring out a newer one with Amanda Coutts, and Kristofer Harding singing I do, as it is fabulous. I love this cd very much, and very resonable price, considering they charge £15.00 for it when you go o see the show.

Whether you approved of Andrew Lloyd Webber's drastic revisions to Starlight Express in the early 90s or - like me - thought that the magic somehow got lost, a new Starlight Express album does not come along that often. So what's it like? Yes it's polished, yes it's (on the whole) well sung, but ultimately it's a dodo.
The main problem with this recording, just as with the revised version of the show itself, is with the voice of Control. An annoying, intrusive and clammering fake child's fake American accent wrecks the best sections of the album just as it did on stage. Some of the best songs, notably Rolling Stock and Right Place, Right Time, have been subjected to harsh edits, whilst others, like A Lotta Locomotion and Girls' Rolling Stock, have been shunted off the disc altogether. To make matters even worse, all four Races have been included, which is a mistake as in their new format they soon become boring and repetitive. A special note too for the Overture, which has been butchered beyond recognition with not one but two dreadful Control voices at once, no rock guitars or drums whatsoever and an added overlay of one of the Races, which never even happened on stage! What were they thinking?
Overall this album is too sequenced, drum-machined and keyboard-heavy - like it was done on the cheap. I dare anyone to listen to "The Blues" and tell me it's not a four-piece band jamming over a drum machine. There were 16 people in that orchestra pit, guys. On the plus side, Reva Rice as Pearl, Greg Ellis as Rusty and Jon Partridge as Electra carry the show with flair and style - surely the perfect players for the roles.... Read more ›

Keeps up the locomotion
