3.0 out of 5 stars Stark Warning 15 Aug 2012

I came across this book on the free list. It caught my eye for the blurb, yet I was very suspicious of the reviews. 80% of them had only reviewed James Raven books and given it 5 stars. I very nearly didn't download it, but I tried the sample and that was it, I was in.

This is a police procedural story, but the usp is that it is about the lead detective in a Celebrity Crime Squad. A killer is threatening to kill someone every time a talk show host is seen on TV.

This book was very readable. There was nothing much that held me up or pulled me out of the story. It wasn't the most wonderful story, but certainly an enjoyable one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic TV storyline 6 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Stark Warning
What a great Tv storyline, and my first time reading this author, they always say the best authors and storylines are from authors that know their subject, anyone who has ever watched the Jeremy Kyle type show here in the UK will understand why this subject is so topical, or the type of show made popular by Jerry Springer.
Great characters with a plausible London setting and a great detective as central character. I'll certainly be looking out for more of this authors work.
Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Enjoyable 1 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book. It moved along well and made you want to know what happened next. It features a TV host called Jessica who hosts a show a la Jeremy Kyle and it seems somebody has taken exception to her and decides if she appears on TV anymore then people will die. Police Inspector Sam Quinn is in charge of this case and I really liked him despite his faults and I'd like to read more tales featuring him too.
Luckily I got this free on the Kindle but will look for more by this author.

Although killing people connected to the trash TV show idea is not unique - I have recently read another book based on that premise - I liked this one. The idea of a "celebrity crime squad" is an intriguing one. Not too long ago it might have seemed just too far fetched, but in light of events in the UK over the past couple of years, it really doesn't seem so unrealistic after all. I have to confess that I suspected just about everyone at one time or another, even some of the police officers, although that was only a thought. A couple of my suspects ended up dead, so they were definitely out of the frame! I even briefly wondered about the person who did turn out to be the killer, for the very reasons that the police finally worked it out on, but I didn't hold onto the thought, there was too much else going on, and the author very cleverly misdirected this reader. The fact that the killer was hiding in plain sight and the means by which he was able to gain the access to his victims was rather neat. The clues are there, you just have to be able to pick up on them and keep them in mind.

This police inspector has major character flaws, his preferred method of dealing with stress gets him into lots of trouble and when it finally catches up with him, it prevents him from doing his job properly. Will someone else pay the price for his weakness?

Whilst this book is an entertaining (no pun intended) and easy read, it is also, on reflection and analysis, a quite deep and dark commentary on modern life and the kind of television, programmes which appeal on a very base level.

2.0 out of 5 stars below average thriller 10 Aug 2012
By BathBun
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
poorly written (even forgets the name of the lead character at one point calling her Jennifer Lee instead of Jessica Lee) sub-standard detective story. Trite premise already overworked in other fiction and the actual murderer was so obvious it made the remaining chapters a chore to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok for free 18 Jan 2014

Had I paid for this it would have got 2 stars as its simplistic style and predictable plot makes it a poor read but it was free and made a night of insomnia pass more quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Horrendous! 17 Jan 2014

A very clever whodunnit which keeps the reader guessing right up to the gruesome end. As it progresses it seems real enough, but with afterthought could a thug like the hero really be a senior and respected police officer?
