BBC Review

Four years on from breaching the pop charts with "Right On!", Silicone Soul deliver the edifyingly rich new studio album. Comparitively their sound resides somewhere between the deep broken beats of Jazzanova and the spacious, progressivehouse of Circulation. Staring Into Space expertly embraces their funk-influenced past, whilst amalgamating contemporary electronica forces to create a stunning album.

This is a cross-pollination of dubbed out grooves ("Folie A Deux", "Smoke And Mirrors" and "Inferno") and deep, emotive house. In the latter camp, "Les Nocturnes" blends live musicianship with sampled loops and psychedelic soundscapes to create a contemporary slant on Jean Michel Jarre's analogue arias.

The fantastic "Under A Werewolf Moon" meanwhile pays homage to the acid house sound of the late 1980's (not unlike Robin S's kitsch "Show Me Love") whilst riding a melodic track that has been appropriately updated to suit the tastes of today's electronica generation.

On "Feeling Blue", the lead single, Craig Morrison and Graeme Reedie reunite with Louise Marshall, the voice behind "Right On!", and leave nothing to chance with a beautifully crafted anthemic composition (borrowing its hook from a Candi Staton composition) that melds chunky house grooves with disco strings and funky guitar riffs.

The only other full vocal offering features label mate Envoy on the lacklustre "You Can't Lose What You Never Had" - a downbeat number that sounds surprisingly out of place. It's the only blot on an otherwise exceptional collection that refreshingly melds elements of traditional funk and jazz with bits of ambient-dub, house tempos and sprawling orchestral pop.

With Daft Punk having recently left an unsightly stain on dance music's copy book with their lacklustre Human After All album you would do well to reaffirm your faith and get a copy of this once it hits the shelves. --Jack Smith

4.0 out of 5 stars Not ground breaking but most certainly listenable. 12 April 2005
Format:Audio CD
Not ground breaking but most certainly listenable. over the years ive come to expect quality music from Soma having other artists such as Slam, Funk D'void and Master H signed to their reputable record label, this album did not disappoint and has that trademark soma sound to it. If you are already a fan of Soma's music i really recommend this album, if not u may want to sample it before making any decisions

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkroom dubs sums it up! 3 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
I got into Silicon Soul after listening to their Royksopp Poor Leno remix, which is an INCREDIBLE track and amazingly surpasses the original.....I then listened and bought both Radio 1 Essential Mixes that they've done...which in my view are probably some of the best DJ mixes I've ever listened to and certainly the best essential mixes. I bought the album on vinyl, without hearing any of the songs...except the ones on the mixes and......I can say I was instantly blown away. The songs have incredible production and are just so deep and dubby, whilst holding a funky rhythm...something I think very producers manage. I mix the vinly together a lot, playing both records in full as all the tracks really complement each other. If you want something techy but also very deep...this is your album and in my view the best I've heard.....if you're looking for the next MOS anthems mix or Hed Kandi its prob not for you!

Deliciously smooth and groovy. Feelin' blue will get even the most dance-averse grooving and shaking. Deep & soulful-not to be missed.

I've have an eclectic musical taste, and one of the types of music like is "Electronic, Ambient". I discovered the music on ITunes Radio while looking for new music for my IPod. "Under The Werewolf Moon" is my favorite tune on the CD but the whole CD is very good if you like this kind of music.

A seriously good grown-up party album, guaranteed to get even the shyest and stodgiest wallflowers moving to the beats.

Especially recommended are tracks 3 (Les Nocturnes), 8 (Under A Werewolf Moon), and 9 (Room 666 At The Deadly Hotel). If these don't get your smoove thang going, check for a pulse 'coz nothing ever will again.

This hepcat gives it 4 whiskers.
