5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too 22 Aug 2007
By TeensReadToo TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Fans of Jerry Spinelli's STARGIRL will jump and shout when they hear about the sequel, LOVE, STARGIRL.

This was not a book that I expected to have a sequel, but in true Jerry Spinelli tradition, Stargirl's story lives on.

Moving from Arizona to Pennsylvania has Stargirl missing the desert, the cactus, and especially Leo. Although she is not absolutely certain about their continued relationship, Stargirl uses her year-long letter to keep Leo up-to-date on the events of her new life. She doesn't ever anticipate sending the letter. In fact, she mentions that Leo will most likely only get to read it if she actually sees him again.

Filled with fantastic memories and new adventures, Spinelli will have readers falling in love with Stargirl all over again. Memories of the past will remind readers of her wonderful spirit, while her new neighborhoods offer great variety. There's cute and always curious Dootsie, who introduces herself as a "human bean." Dootsie takes Stargirl to meet Betty Lou, who fears anything beyond her trailer door. Then there's Charlie, who haunts the local cemetery and his late wife's grave. Alvina, the hot-head, and Perry, the thief, add further color to the cast of characters.

Stargirl's fascination with the changing seasons and the Winter Solstice take her to Enchanted Hill to plot her own personal calendar. It feels right and it offers a way to remember the past.

Stargirl's tale is tender and honest in its straightforward simplicity. Thank you to the author for bringing back this famous character.

4.0 out of 5 stars The heart of life 29 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback
It's been one of those long weekends with everyone off somewhere, so I spent the time with Stargirl, reading her long diary-like letter between feeding the cat and doing the cleaning ... and writing, of course. Stargirl is so endearing, it is difficult to imagine anyone not wanting to spend time with her even if that might be challenging. And when you do spend time in her company some of her stardust inevitably rubs off on you. And hers is a special brand of magic. It's hard to put a name to it. She's different. Being a homeschooler could well have relegated her to the fringes of society, but she has in no way opted out. She is no angry renegade. On the contrary, she is constantly at the very heart of life in her encounters with the people around her. Many of those she befriends are people who are stuck at the limits of society because they are different or because they find living in society difficult. They might greet her with anger or indifference at first, but she persists, coming to appreciate their special brand of being. And in making them feel they are appreciated for what they are, she helps ease them back into the fold. Such a role might make some bigheaded. Not Stargirl. She's a natural, a solid mixture of self-assurance and self-questioning. Of course she makes mistakes, but through her courage in going out of her way to encounter people who are authentic, however strange they might seem, she learns from every single encounter.

Jerry Spinelli adopts a different point of view in this follow-up to his successful Stargirl book. The entire narration is seen from the perspective of Stargirl as if she were writing an on-going dialogue with Leo, her one-time boyfriend now left behind in another State. Dialogue? Well mostly monologue.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful book 19 Dec 2012
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Stargirl is a wonderful story by Jerry Spinelli about a teenage girl who is an unashamed misfit, and what finding love in a mainstream high school does to her and the boy she loves. It is a wonderfully written, powerful story that stays with you for a long, long time after you read it. Love Stargirl is the sequel to Stargirl, and they really need reading together in order to get the most out of them.

Love Stargirl is basically a long, long love letter from Stargirl to the boy she loves, or thinks she might love, Leo. It takes the form of a diary of her life when she moves away from Arizona where Leo lives, to Pennsylvania where she is starting a new life. Love Stargirl is clever and funny and intriguing and lovely. It is sad and yet full of hope. I loved it. In fact, I loved it more than the original book. Together they are wonderful contribution to children's fiction.

I love this book so much! It gives a wonderful new insight into Stargirl's life, from her perspective this time. Every time read these books, I find myself falling deeply in love with every one of the characters, especially Stargirl, who I find it very easy to relate to. I really cannot praise Stargirl highly enough. I think it is of of the most perfect novels I have ever read - and that is saying something!
