Amazon.co.uk Review

It’s a disappointment that Stargate Universe has come to an end with its second season. The third major series to spin out of the original Stargate movie, the show arrived in the midst of a testing time for science fiction television, and with ideas of doing something a little different, the ratings, sadly, meant its run was set to be a very finite one.

Fortunately, there’s plenty that the show managed to put on screen in its short lifespan that makes it worth checking out. And Stargate Universe’s second season ensures it goes out with some style.

We find, this time around, the Destiny in increasing trouble, with supplies short on the ground, and a crew whose relationships continue to bristle. Granted, this is all nothing new. But Stargate Universe’s writing takes the show off in directions you might not be expecting. It’s certainly willing to take its chances, and as such, maybe that’s what’s left some people cold. It’s a pity, though--Stargate Universe is ambitious science fiction television, with a quality cast and strong execution. One or two episodes don’t quite measure up, but that’s a small price to pay in this instance.

This is a show very much worth discovering, if you haven’t already. --Jon Foster

DVD Description

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.

In Season 2, the Destiny continues its journey through the Universe, while its crew suffers from a lack of supplies and no knowledge of its final destination. Struggling to control the ships systems, tempers and personalities of the crew clash. Facing uncharted space and enemies who would take the ship by force, the Destiny crew persevere in their struggle to stay alive and find a way home.

Frakking Awesome 15 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
The Brilliant SGU continues to deliver intelligent scifi drama. The storylines have multi arcs, intertwining with each other, unravelling its charms just like a book, so only attentive viewers will experience its true brilliance, casual/lazy viewers need not apply.

Louis Ferreira wonderfully portrays Young, whose immense stress over his command duties, his personal issues and Rush's shenanigans have pushed him to the edge. He doesn't wink and crack jokes, he behaves like a real person as do the others. The scene with Young and the dying crewman is shocking and really strikes a emotional note, adding to the overall tension.

Why people want the same old thing over and over again is beyond me. Scifi needs to change and expand in order to survive and that is exactly what SGU has given us. I've watched all 30 episodes so far, I didn't text while watching, I didn't email or talk on the phone, I watched the show.
SGU is splendiferous in all respects and demands attention. Highly recommended.

Ok, so i realize that this is quite a premature review, but after viewing the first six episodes on Sky during a marathon sunday session, (have to love sky plus) i had the overwhelming need to blab and yell and cajole anyone and everyone on the wonders of SGU.
The second series does not disappoint, it thrills, and captivates. The creative team have completely superseded their first series they have developed the characters, adding layers of meat to their bones, throwing in both overt and subtle variations to life on board the Destiny. They broadened the scope of alien threats, delved expertly into the fragile human side of its leading characters, not only showing us their warts but what lies beneath (ugh). Finally there is a Sci fi show willing to giving the audience something to revel in, I have nothing negative to say, except that i want more, more of the same please, more surprises more darkness more fragility more special effects.
This is without any doubt the best sci fi show around. It trumps those that have preceded it and if it continues to grow as it has done, it shall be remembered for a very, very long time to come.
SGU for ever.

Excellent on all levels 10 April 2012

This is the second series of SGU and it continues from where the first season left off. The plots are well developed and perfectly in line with the main story, and the series offers so much more than the banal dross that is often put out on prime time television. The acting is quite simply brilliant and it's possible to develop a tremendous sympathy for the characters portrayed.

In this series, the unfortunate crew of Destiny are starting to work together, despite their differences and the tensions that exist between them. The scenes on board the ships are wonderfully dark and atmospheric; and the music fits extremely well. The CGI effects are very impressive which makes the whole product quite superb to watch.

Unfortunately, the decision was made not to continue with the project after the end of the second season; no doubt because there is a desire amongst the TV executives to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and this programme was seen as too "high brow". A great pity as both seasons of this franchise have proven to be some of the best television programming available.

The producers chose not to go out with a bang; a brave decision and one that fits perfectly with the rest of the plot. As the lights on Destiny are quietly switched off, it echoes the termination of the programme, and the final images are a bitter-sweet impression of what might and still could be. They have left the door open, and perhaps one day, we will see someone taking the opportunity to continue the storyline.

This is a truly adult drama in a smart slimline boxset and one that I will enjoy watching again.
