From Amazon.co.uk

It’s a disappointment that Stargate Universe has come to an end with its second season. The third major series to spin out of the original Stargate movie, the show arrived in the midst of a testing time for science fiction television, and with ideas of doing something a little different, the ratings, sadly, meant its run was set to be a very finite one.

Fortunately, there’s plenty that the show managed to put on screen in its short lifespan that makes it worth checking out. And Stargate Universe’s second season ensures it goes out with some style.

We find, this time around, the Destiny in increasing trouble, with supplies short on the ground, and a crew whose relationships continue to bristle. Granted, this is all nothing new. But Stargate Universe’s writing takes the show off in directions you might not be expecting. It’s certainly willing to take its chances, and as such, maybe that’s what’s left some people cold. It’s a pity, though--Stargate Universe is ambitious science fiction television, with a quality cast and strong execution. One or two episodes don’t quite measure up, but that’s a small price to pay in this instance.

This is a show very much worth discovering, if you haven’t already. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars FULL CONCENTRATION AMPLY REWARDED 10 Feb 2014
By Mr. D. L. Rees TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Thank goodness for DVD box sets! They enable viewers to appreciate more fully what first appeared on the television screen, where complex storylines were not helped by breaks for advertisements and weekly waits for the next instalment.

Fans of SGU STARGATE UNIVERSE here have been treated most royally, the box set generous with its extras. Each of the twenty episodes comes with a commentary. Each of the five discs has bonuses. Those on Disc 3 are especially helpful and may be worth watching before starting on this second season. They give a detailed guide of the ancient spaceship Destiny, revealing much that some viewers (including me) had not realized. Can this ship have a life and agenda of its own? Can a return to Earth be a poor substitute for the exciting alternative that seems increasingly possible?

Great scripts. Fine performances as tensions rise and loyalties are tested. Especially with impact is Robert Carlyle as the enigmatic NIcholas Rush (actor and character forces to be reckoned with). As ever, danger is never far away. Cue for spectacular stunts. Always the hardware and the settings convince, except perhaps in the excellent Episode 8. A desert created by special effects? Not at all! It is an actual location - as revealed in yet another interesting bonus.

Despite all the bonuses, I found aspects confusing - especially when simulations and stone switches were involved. This is clearly thus a box set which will amply repay a return visit, those intricate storylines thereby appreciated all the more.

Further seasons would have been most welcome, but many may appreciate the way this one ends - an optimistic note, with the adventures set to continue, even if we are not there to see them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frakking Awesome 15 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
The Brilliant SGU continues to deliver intelligent scifi drama. The storylines have multi arcs, intertwining with each other, unravelling its charms just like a book, so only attentive viewers will experience its true brilliance, casual/lazy viewers need not apply.

Louis Ferreira wonderfully portrays Young, whose immense stress over his command duties, his personal issues and Rush's shenanigans have pushed him to the edge. He doesn't wink and crack jokes, he behaves like a real person as do the others. The scene with Young and the dying crewman is shocking and really strikes a emotional note, adding to the overall tension.

Why people want the same old thing over and over again is beyond me. Scifi needs to change and expand in order to survive and that is exactly what SGU has given us. I've watched all 30 episodes so far, I didn't text while watching, I didn't email or talk on the phone, I watched the show.
SGU is splendiferous in all respects and demands attention. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cutting edge sci-fi 9 Sep 2013
Format:DVD
That this show should be cancelled is extremely disappointing. The character development was top-notch, the story lines were strong, and the science was cutting edge: they introduced mixed chimerism for the kidney transplant, they explored the nature of consciousness, and promised to explore the notion that consciousness, rather than matter, is the basic constituent of the universe. I am very, very sad to see this show go. it had enormous potential.

As it stands, we still have 20 episodes of extraordinarily good (If at times somewhat dark) scifi. Well worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series was cancelled much too soon 4 Jan 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Stargate Universe presented a much darker tale compared to Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis, but it was no less enjoyable. A great series which was pulled just as it was beginning to take off.
