Nothing New For Fans,
By
This review is from: Stargate: Season 1: Atlantis - The Official Companion (Paperback)
Although I'm a real fan of Atlantis, this companion was disappointing. Episode synopsis were brief. There was no information on the characters that let you know any more than you would learn from watching a couple of first season episodes. Most notibly it was lacking in interesting trivia which is generally one of the more enjoyable parts of episode guides. The style of writing (particularly 'Weirs' reports on each crew member) seemed to be aimed at a very young reader - precisely the style of writing that stopped me buying the Stargate magazines. Most of the colour photographs in the book were publicity shots for season 1 - images even the most casual SGA fan will have seen a thousand times. Some different shots would have been nice or some behind the scenes images perhaps? There are some nice production images near the end of the book and if you don't have the DVD's to listen to the commentry, David Hewlett's notes on 'The Storm' are interesting. Strangely the costume designer's interview doesn't mention the major clothing company who clearly supply a lot of the clothes- an example of the missing trivia which might have been nice- instead focusing on Tayla's clothing. On a more positive note there were some interesting bits and pieces about how the characters were originally envisioned and casting but you really have to read through a lot of drivel to come across this. I have episode guides from various series (although this is the first from the stargate universe) and in comparison to all, this was a dissappointment. I recommend putting the money you might spend on this towards the DVD's with it's great commentaries.

Good Stuff For Stargate Fans,
By Rodney Meek - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stargate: Season 1: Atlantis - The Official Companion (Paperback)
One of my criteria for judging an episode guide is: Does it have anything to say about various minor recurring characters? Because typically I like them more than the main cast. So my question in reading this book was, did it find time to include an entry on Dr. Zelenka? Yes. Yes, it did. And all was right with the world.
This is a guide to the first season of "Stargate Atlantis", a spin-off, of course, to the popular "Stargate: SG-1" series. In this show, our group of heroes and heroines is stuck in the Pegasus Galaxy after a one-way transgalactic hop via a super-powered gate dial-out from the SGC on Earth. They hope to find the lost city of Atlantis, home of the long-ago-ascended Ancients, and find it they do. Unfortunately, they also discover that the Ancients bailed out of Pegasus some 10,000 years ago after accidentally creating their own nemeses in the form of the Wraith, who really enjoy treating humans as tasty lifeforce snacks. And while there are various human-settled worlds still to be found, not all of them are delighted to see the folks from Earth show up, especially once word gets around that the Stargate team sort of accidentally woke the Wraith back up way before schedule. This book presents a brief summary of each episode of the first season, along with some minimal cast and crew notes. There's also commentary provided by cast and crew about what went on in the making of the episodes, what their original intentions had been, what worked and what didn't. There are brief character sketches of the main cast, which really have much more to do with details on the actors and how they got the roles and how they approach them. Also included is a section on the development of the show and another on some of the departments or key players (stunts, production design) behind the scenes. A lot of photos are provided, mostly in black and white but a few publicity stills in color. I had very low expectations for this book based on previous Stargate episode guides, but it very much exceeded them. It's not a classic of its kind nor indispensable, but if you're a keen fan of the show and you really want to know some of the details about what it takes to put together an episode, you won't be disappointed. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful:

The First Year...,
By Robert M. Gaul "Bobby G" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Stargate: Season 1: Atlantis - The Official Companion (Paperback)
Usually spinoffs don't fair very well, or even a revisit might bomb. But taking a (more successful) cue from Trek, Stargate-Atlantis (SG-1 spinoff) is a marvelous telling of a completely new venue for the intrepid adventurers of Stargate Command.
And if you thought the Goa'Uld were bad...you ain't seen nothing yet! Here come the WRAITH. Goodbye snakes...Hello life-suckers! This book is wonderful in the episode synopsis, and the pictures, both B&W and color add the 'icing on the cake", as it were. Dr Weir's "reports" bring a personal touch to the characters as well. I especially like the quotes that frequent the pages...nice touch. The author has done a fantastic job of relating the first year of this series in a way which holds your interest, no matter how many times you read (or REread) it. Make space in your bookcase, next to the Stargate SG-1 volumes...this one's a definite KEEPER! Bobby G. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful:
