An ear-splitting crack and dust and morsels of shattered stone rained down from the lintel above her head.
"Bloody Nora!" Siobhan Kelly jerked around.
"Do I have your attention now?" That nasty black box of a gun draped across his midriff, he came swaggering towards her like something out of those Rambo fi lms and had the nerve to grin.
"You shot at me!"
"I didn’t shoot at you. If I’d shot at you, you wouldn’t be complaining."
This wasn’t funny. "Of all the –"
"Ah!" A surprisingly elegant hand fl ew up and he took off his sunglasses, hard and angry eyes belying the grin. "In case you hadn’t noticed, Professor, we’re not in Kansas anymore. Carter here explained a few facts to you just now, but maybe you didn’t get the message. So –"
"Oh please! I’ve been conducting excavations since before you were an itch in your daddy’s trousers. Do you have any idea of who I am?"
"One huge honkin’ pain in the mikta. I, on the other hand, am the guy who’s under orders to bring you back in one piece, and if you interrupt me again I’ll gag you. We didn’t get a chance to introduce ourselves, so, for the record, I’m Colonel Jack O’Neill. Colonel means you’ll do exactly as I tell you when I tell you, and if I’m not around, you’ll listen to Major Carter. Are we clear on this?"

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a dissapointment, 21 Aug 2005
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: Trial by Fire (Mass Market Paperback)
It took a long time for this book to get interesting. I had to force myself to read it because I spent a lot of money for it. About half way through it got better. Too bad these books aren't available in the US. It would have cost less. Also, the author seems to keep switching back and forth between British English and American English. It was a bit distracting...

2.0 out of 5 stars Missed The Mark, 15 Sep 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: Trial by Fire (Mass Market Paperback)
As a fan of the tv show Stargate:SG1 I ordered this book with much anticipation given the promises made by Fandemonium Books that this time around Stargate novels would actually read like someone who had watched the show.

I have no doubt Sabine Bauer is a fan, but I found her character depictions somewhat unconvincing, particularly, Dr Siobhan Kelly. The addition of this new character actually detracted from the plot. Odd that a character who was supposed to be quintessentially (read stereotpyically) English had an Irish surname. Siobhan is also an odd name for an English woman of her advanced years and obvious upper class background. It's small details like these that make up the authenticity of any character, and thus, allow us to become immersed in a story. Nevertheless, I gave the book a 'fair go', reading it cover to cover in the vain hope the author would hit her stride.

Carter was reduced to a one-dimensional character who appeared only long enough to insert her apparent response for all occasions -'Holy Hannah'. The character only said this line once in the actual tv series, and that was one time too many. Unfortunately, the character inconsistencies and Kelly's jarring presence were enough to make me lose interest in the rest of the plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars I thought it was ok, 30 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: Trial by Fire (Mass Market Paperback)
I rather liked it actually, it was one of the better of the series so far, there were some aspects of SG-1s characters, mainly O'Neill which were not true to the TV series in my opinion. I did like it when it got going a bit and there was some action. I would recommend this book to O'Neill fans. Whether you like it or not, its miles better than the original books written when the series first came out, these books are actually written by people who like the series and the characters and are fans of the series. if you go on the stargate book website I think it tells you that fans sent their book ideas in and the best ones were chosen, so atleast you know their hearts were in the right place when they wrote them and allows O'Neill and the rest of the original SG-1 to keep galavanting around the universe without having to worry about being promoted or getting too old or leaving the show.
