Amazon.co.uk Review

The 1994 film Stargate was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted when celebrating their Independence Day. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the teacher's-pet primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian Gods who are none too chummy after the events of the original film. The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father literally joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone. There's something of The Time Tunnel to the show's premise, but amid a dearth of derivative lookalikes, Stargate has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi.

On this DVD: "Divide and Conquer" presents a disturbing theory that none of us may be who we think we are. Newly recurring guest star Vanessa Angel returns as Freya to reveal that "za'tarc" technology can programme a person to be an assassin without their knowledge. This episode becomes a claustrophobic showcase for the actors to display distrust for one another. "Window of Opportunity" is the now mandatory Groundhog Day scenario episode that all franchise series must attempt. Typically the SG-1 writers make more of the material than in other shows, with O'Neill and Teal'c growing to enjoy having 10 hours to live repeatedly. Ultimately, though, there's a lesson to be learned about the fruitlessness of trying to recapture the past.

"Watergate" demonstrates the excellent continuity kept up by the show in revealing what happened to the original missing Dial Home Device--the Russians have it! Not only that, they have their own Stargate, a disturbing amount of information on the SG-1 team, a mysterious link to a water planet and a scientist who bears an uncanny resemblance to Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation (Marina Sirtis). "The First Ones" is a warm variant on the Lion and the Mouse fable when Daniel establishes a relationship with a primitive alien creature. The planet is the original home world of the Goa'uld parasites, meaning that the SG Team's rescue mission turns into a dangerous period of paranoid suspicion. Who has been compromised and what does Chaka really want with Daniel? --Paul Tonks

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but could have been better, 24 Aug 2001

This review is from: Stargate S.G -1: Season 4 (Vol. 15) [DVD] (DVD)
I own every Stargate sg-1 dvd and I'm sure that this one is definately worth buying.

The first episode is Divide and Conquer, it's the 3rd episode of the "S&J episode arc". Its plot is simple: A summit between humans and Tok'ra + a few people brainwashed by the Goa'uld who want that summit to fail. Weak plot but good show anyway.

The second one is the best sg-1 episode ever: Window of opportunity. Jack and Teal'c are caught in a time loop. great plot and funny show.

The third one is the reason why I only rated this dvd 4 stars. Watergate is quite stupid, involving Russians who can't close the gate they opened. Stupid plot but good acting.

The fourth one is the second best episode ever. The first ones involves Daniel, meeting an Unas and trying to communicate with him. This episode has a very good sequel in season 5, Beast Of Burden. Great episode overall.

In a nutshell, this dvd contains very good episodes and is well worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars One bad but three good episodes, 22 Sep 2001

This review is from: Stargate S.G -1: Season 4 (Vol. 15) [DVD] (DVD)
"Divide & Conquer" - regarded by many fans as one of the worst "Stargate" episodes ever made this episode unfortunately suffers from poor plotting, sexist costuming, and the beginning of the unfortunate 'romance' between two of the main characters which so infuriated the show's US Air Force advisors and contributed to the dramatic dip in ratings the show suffered in Season Four.

"Window of Opportunity" - a fun "Groundhog Day" romp with O'Neill and Teal'c caught in a time loop and having to live the same day over and over again. There are some very funny scenes with some great comic timing displayed by Richard Dean Anderson (O'Neill) and Christopher Judge (Teal'c).

"Watergate" - not as exciting as some "Stargate" episodes but with very impressive special effects, a storyline reminiscent of James Cameron's "The Abyss", and a fine guest starring role for Marina Sirtis.

"The First Ones" - an excellent episode in every way written by the multi-talented Peter DeLuise with a wonderful performance by Dion Johnstone as the Unas 'Chaka' who abducts Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks). An episode that is understandably very popular with fans and has already spawned an equally excellent sequel. The DVD is worth buying for this episode alone.

The audio commentaries by the directors are also very interesting and full of fascinating insights into the making of the show.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit patchy but worth buying all the same, 14 July 2004

This review is from: Stargate S.G -1: Season 4 (Vol. 15) [DVD] (DVD)
I feel that 3 stars is too low and 4 stars is too high for this collection, but I'm confined but the marking system so 3 stars it is. I'm taking off points for Watergate (silly and dull) and The First Ones (just dull) but the other two episodes are worth having and even The First Ones is of note, being the first ep that we encounter the Unas.

OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE SPOILERS BELOW...

DIVIDE AND CONQUER splits fans down the middle as it tackles the relationship between O'Neill and his second in command, Carter. Anyone who has paid attention over previous episodes/seasons will not be surprised to hear admissions of deeper feelings between the two although, as it is against regulations, there is no suggestion that they will ever act on those feelings. The plot about SGC men and women being programmed to assassinate the President is secondary to the O'Neill/Carter storyline and, although I was glad to see the back of him, I can understand why fans of Martouf were disappointed to see him go out in this episode rather than something that gave him a stronger final storyline. His death still packs a punch though. All in all, I found the episode an enjoyable piece of character development and an interesting companion to the earlier 'Upgrades'.

WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY is hilarious. It's not an original idea but it is well executed and the cast look like they are having a great time - as you would expect, RDA is in his element but Christopher Judge has a talent for comedy too and they both make this episode worth watching. And for all you 'shippers there is a Jack and Sam (time loop and so consequence free) kiss - he even resigns first so as not to flout the regs!

WATERGATE is a bit of nonsense about the Russians messing up. They've been trying to bring 'amazing' water through their stargate and it is now locked open. Naturally SG-1 step in to save the day. I found this one a bit dull and silly.

THE FIRST ONES is a Daniel-centric ep in which our hero is captured by a large, unfriendly beast called an Unas. Naturally, being Daniel, he begins to work out some rudimentary communication with the beast and eventually builds a rapport. Some of this is quite funny but I found quite a lot of it slow going. If you like Daniel/Michael Shanks then chances are that you are going to love this episode.

The extras, as ever, are impressive. Amusing and informative commentaries for every episode and a little featurette on Jack O'Neill plus trailers and a Fan Club spot.
