Best known for her novels set in ancient Egypt, Pauline Gedge has created an unforgetable foray into a totally different experience. Set in another galaxy, this book explores worlds far different from our own, linked together by their stargates and their gods. One by one we watch the gods tempted and falling, their power destroyed with the resulting closure of their stargates, their suns fading and dying. Abandoned by the all powerful god who created them, their time draws to and end - but from that ending, new life will spring. This is an incredibly powerful novel, which can be read on several different levels. It is fantasy, myth, an examination of the nature of life and death, of good and evil, of temptation and the helpless inevitability of the fall. Pauline Gedge creates pictures in your mind, and transports you to these worlds, allows you to know the gods and to feel their struggle and despair. From the very first page there is a overlying feeling of impending doom, as you step onto the emotional rollercoaster. As a self confessed bookworm, if I had to name one book as my favourite, this would be it.
