Review

"Monaghan's exciting and fluent second novel." --FT, March 2009

Review

'She is adept at conjuring the giddy excitement and highs of life on the edge. An almost unbearably tense read'

4.0 out of 5 stars Rogue Traders, 27 Feb 2009
By Catharine Adams "Catharine Arnold" (Nottingham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Starfishing (Paperback)
Nicola Monaghan tackles 'that difficult second novel' with aplomb in this gripping study of the amoral world of City traders set in 1997. Frankie Stein, so called for her monster appetite for pills, booze and men, steps into the frenetic world of the futures market and her boss's bed with devastating consequences. This may look like chick lit at first glance, but it's anything but as we uncover the deadly secrets of Frankie's high octane, high risk lifestyle, on the trading floor and in the clubs. With its City slickers and chemical highs, it's very much a novel of its time, but it also presents some fundemental and uncomfortable truths about family secrets, coming of age and why married men are ALWAYS bad news.

4.0 out of 5 stars The pace of this novel was very good, 11 Jun 2008
This review is from: Starfishing (Paperback)
The pace of this novel was very good. From the opening chapter, Nicola is very good at describing things. The atmosphere in the disco, the flashing lights and the central character Frankie Stein was a force to be reckoned with. The young girl lived life definitely on the edge and she was in no mood to be messed around with. The description of the people working on the trading floor was a situation that was very intense and as I read I could taste the atmosphere through the pages.

Frankie was besotted with Tom, he promised her the world but she was shocked to see his wife Baby but even this did not deter her from her goals.

It was a shame what happened to Tom and obviously Frankie was left literally in a cliff-hanging situation.

I think Nicola is excellent at describing things in this book, I don't know what Nicola has got planned in her next writing venture but I think there is some more mileage in Frankie as a character and I think she could still be very powerful in business if she kept on a straight course and made drink and drug-taking a thing of the past.

Well done Nicola, you are a fine writer and continued success.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book - fasten your safety belt!, 3 April 2008
This review is from: Starfishing (Paperback)
What a pace this book moves at! It's a real form and content thing - the main character, Frankie, is caught up in a vortex both in her work and in her personal life in which her own sense of self gradually starts to slip. And you're with her every step of the way - to the totally unexpected ending!
