It has long been a mystery to me exactly why The Church never exploded from the underground to the mainstream music scene.

Formed 20 years ago they have 10 studio albums under their collective belt, but Starfish, released in 1987 remains their masterpiece.A perfectly judged 10 songs long, the band don't put a foot wrong.Seamlessly blending Marty Wilson Piper's glouriously melodic soaked Rickenbacker work with Steve Kilbey's deadpan vocal delivery and uniquely evocative themes. The album spent six months on the US billboard charts and was graciously received by critics at the time. The first single taken from the album, the ballad 'Under the Milky Way' gave The Church their first international hit.The song is actually on the soundtrack to the second series of Trigger Happy TV. All the songs on the album at the very least are on a par with 'Under the Milky Way.'The band wear their impeccable influences(The Byrds,Siouxse and the banshee) well and, like all great albums starfish transcends its time to become a timeless record. There is a conspicuous lack of the preveiling musical genre of the time namely mid 80's keyboard/synth driven New Romanticism. Personal favourites from the album are Antenna which features a tour de force vocal performance from Kilbey, and Hotel Womb ,a moody ambient piece with a beautifully naked guitar and bass intro.

Put simply, this is an understated masterpiece.

A timely reissue from a band who are relatively unknown in the U.K.but have a loyal and devoted following nonetheless.
Starfish is the album that finally broke The Church to a wider global audience, and this remastered release shows off the bands atmospheric guitar pop to great effect.
From the opening duo of Destination and the radio hit, Under The Milky Way,Starfish hinted that The Church should have reached a much wider audience. The fact that major global success eluded the band says more about their inner demons than the quality of The Church's music
The bonus disc includes accoustic versions of,Under The Milky Way,Antenna and Spark,as well as hard to find tracks like Musk and Warm spell.
Starfish was proof that great guitar bands in the eighties did not just come from Manchester,or Athens,Georgia. If you missed this album first time around, then now is the time to acquaint yourself with a half forgotten gem.

In my years of record buying, this is my all-time, without-a-doubt, never-challenged number 1 fave album. It was the perfect record delivered to the public at the peak of the band's career (by the way, their new 2002 release After Everything Now This is their best work since Starfish). Every song shimmers with sonic perfection, every jangle pierces through a lush universe of ambience and reverb. The vocals soothing, haunting, honest. The songwriting is deep and otherworldly, yet moody and human. Yeah, everyone says it, so forgive me for being cliche: if I was stranded with my Discman and one c.d. on an island, yup - it would be this one. I think I've probably bought two dozen copies since 1988 - replacing lost ones or those that were melted from overplay, or copies I gave away to my closest friends as, somehow, a "piece of me" (you know, the way one's favorite c.d. could ever be a reflection of the fan). Anyway, this c.d. is timeless and worthy of any fan of layered, jangly, sonic and lush guitar music - indie, alternative or otherwise.
