Product Description

Product Description

The "New Avengers" made Joanna Lumley a household name - immensely popular (as much with women as men), intelligent and glamorous, she has through her journalism proved herself to be a fine writer too. She has now decided to write her memoirs, which will be her first book, and promises to put her in a writing league with Bogarde and Mortimer. The story begins in Kashmir, where she was born, and then Malaya where she attended the army school in Kuala Lumpur. After boarding school in Sussex, she joined the Swinging Sixties, with a flat in Earls Court and a string of modelling jobs: this was the London of Biba, Nick's diner and the Marquee - of Mick Jagger and David Bailey. She became pregnant and, most unusually for those days, decided to bring up her child, a boy, on her own. Her career declined for a while, but then unexpectedly she landed the New Avengers job.

I must admit that I was surprised--pleasantly so--by Joanna Lumley's memoir. She is far more of an adventurer than I would previously have imagined (though I later discovered "Girl Friday," the chronicle of her adventures alone for over a week on a desert island--at the request of the BBC and with a film crew on a boat offshore...), and has a special gift for eloquent prose (in "Girl Friday," we also see her drawings--is there anything this woman CAN'T do well?!?). She details her childhood in Kashmir, the shock of seeing England for the first time (she was disappointed to find that Piccadilly Circus had nothing to do with clowns...), and her life and career thus far, from her modeling days to her stint on "The New Avengers," and well beyond. Readers will also discover Lumley's committment to a variety of causes--including animal rights/vegetarianism--and the eloquent rationale behind it.

The book also features a nice collection black-and-white photographs.

Ms Lumley writes in an engaging style and takes the reader on a journey crossing many continents, starting with S.E.Asia where she was born into a military family. The sights ,smells and sounds of her early years are wonderfully captured and we then learn of her start in show business via the modelling route and the ensuing bit parts in movies as a "glamour girl".Whilest it all looked glam on the outside, Joanna did not have it easy all the time,as the bills mounted and work dried up, and with a small son to look after. It was many years before her acting career took off with the New Avengers. It is obvious that Ms Lumley is a woman of high intelligence and her passion for worthwhile causes, particularly animal welfare is evident throughout. A highly enjoyable read, especially if you are a fan, and even if you are not, there are hundreds of interesting facts and stories from her own background to keep any reader interested.
