Product Description

Product Description

The SAT3520U3SR USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure turns two 3.5" SATA (SATA I, SATA II, SATA III) hard drives into an external RAID array through a USB 3.0 connection. Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB per bay) can be used to greatly enhance your computer storage/backup capabilities.

Whether it''s greater capacity or data redundancy you''re looking for, this USB 3.0 dual drive enclosure is the solution, with built-in support for multiple RAID modes (RAID 0, 1, JBOD) which enables the enclosure to fit the role you need. The drive enclosure also supports non-RAID operation, so both drives can be used independant.

Compliant with the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 specification, which can provide up to 5 Gbps of data bandwidth (10x more than USB 2.0), the SAT3520U3SR RAID enclosure makes it easier and faster to transfer or stream large amounts of data. Although the dual drive enclosure will perform at peak speeds when connected to a USB 3.0 host computer, it is also more than suitable for use with older systems, as it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 connections.

The SAT3520U3SR Dual Drive USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure is backed by our 2-year manufacturer''s warranty and free lifetime technical support.

3.0 out of 5 stars Take care!! 15 July 2013

Ensure you use drives compatible with building RAID1 arrays (some GREEN Desktop drives are not suitable). The documentation is not clear and for me a deeper knowledge and experience of building RAID arrays would have helped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the box 23 April 2013
Size Name:USB 3.0|Verified Purchase
Good little enclosure. I used it for two 1GB drives in a RAID 1 array for mirrored drives with 1GB storage.

Reading from the enclosure is really fast. Writing is somewhat slower but still much quicker than USB2.

The only quibble is that it should be clearer which drive is the master and which is the slave when you look at the drives internally. This will only matter after a drive failure, however, because the mirroring is only from drive zero to drive one. Get them the wrong way around and you would be at risk of losing data when the mirroring restarts.

Works OK, reasonable value but it could be s much better.
Cheap case manufacture, quite noisy fan, poor instructions and I'm not a novice user, but mostly very fiddly to change the configuration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and cheap dual RAID 11 May 2014

Size Name:USB 3.0 w/UASP & SATA III|Verified Purchase
I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro, which doesn't support USB 3 or thunderbolt, so my only option for fast external HDD was e-SATA. I was attracted to the StarTech as it was cheap, well designed, and StarTech have a good reputation. Plus it has USB 3, which is good if I eventually upgrade to a machine that supports it.

So far so good. I have it hooked to a Sonnet Tempo E2P PCIe card, and RAID mode is 0 (striped). I don't need the drives to be fault tolerant, just fast. There are 2 WD green 1TB drives inside.

I'm getting write speeds of 110 MB/sec which I'm very happy about. If the device proves to be reliable, I'll be getting a second one, and using them both as off-site backups.

Some advice if you get this drive :

(1) Don't mix drive sizes in combined mode, because when one is full, it may hang. In fact only mix drive sizes in JBOD mode.

(2) When you switch RAID modes, you may need to format the drives individually before the new mode is picked up correctly. So select JBOD, format each drive, then switch to the mode you actually want. This worked for me when changing from combined to striped.

At the end of the day, this is a cheap case, so expect some quirks. But if you are methodical when setting up, you will get good results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for the price 6 Mar 2014

First impression out of the box was that this is quite an good looking unit. Installing 2 x 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm discs and configuring them for a RAID 0 configuration took about 15 minutes. Hooked it up to my MacBook Pro and did a speed test (Black Magic Design). I was really surprised to get over 250MB/s read and write speeds over USB3 - that's as fast as my Thunderbolt disc! It will surely drop off as the disc fills up but I'm impressed!

... 'Does what it says on the tin' so to speak. Easy installation and operation which in my case was a RAID1 configuration for Mac.
