As there were no reviews on this item I when I bought this Hard drive enclosure I thought it might help anyone trying to decide on the choice out there!

This enclosure works a treat....I have had it now for a couple of weeks, and have used both usb and e-sata to copy data, the speed of e-sata is stunning, an hour of music via usb only took 6 minuits via the e-sata cable, amazing!

The Hard drive slots in with ease, push shut the door, turn on and hey presto your ready to go!. Do remember to Format the hard drive on the first time round!
I intend to get another hard drive and swap it around, leaving the other at a friend's house; this will give me back up if the worst were to happen!

The unit seems well built, the fan could be quieter, but it is hardly noisy....that is my only negative comment on a very good piece of equipment.

On the whole I am very pleased with this enclosure, and would recommend it quite without any qualms.

I hope this helps anyone in trying to decide on weather to buy or not!.

I bought a eSATA enclosure for data recovery and I particularly wanted eSATA as I wanted the speed compared to USB2. USB3 was not an option as there is no spare expansion slots in the system I want to the use the StarTech 3.5 inch eSATA enclosure with. I have not used it over USB.

First, 3.5 in drives come in various heights. This enclosure works flawlessly with 1/3 height drives. Drives other than 1/3 height are difficult to fit as they flop about in the 1/3 height space and getting the connectors to line up isn't easy. Thats something to keep in mind if you will be swapping drives. Its not really an issue if this will just be an external storage box and the drive is fitted only once.

Second, the fan is objectionally loud. You could not run this device as storage for a media player in your lounge. You would need to disable the fan. Other enclosures manage to keep the drive within operational limits without a fan, so why does this device have one?
After 30 min running, smartctl -a reports the drive temprature as 36C, which is the same as the drives in the main PC. Stalling the fan makes the enclosure silent and the drive temperature rise to over 50C, which is too hot.

The provided eSATA and USB cables are robust and well made. They are both too short to reach a tower PC installed under a desk so you may want to buy other longer cables.

Does what it says on the tin but its loud and difficult to fit drives other than 1/3 height.
Reccommendation - find a fanless enclosure.

I have about 15 old hard drives that I have replaced over the years, I was wondering what to do with them until I saw this. Easy way of making external storage, or just to copy data off old drives. I've had several drives with problems, usually software issues, that I have removed from my PC's, I did not know what to do with them. I was sure they still contained data that I wanted, using this disc caddy is the solution. Load the drive into the carrier and there it is, brilliant. So good I've now ordered a second for my other PC.

Bought 2 of these as had been using one happily at home with a 2 TB drive. Got the second to use at work along with a 4TB internal drive and interchange the drives depending on my location and use. I cannot get Windows or Mac to recognise the 4TB drive beyond 2 TB, or if formatted in a computer or other device correctly its an unrecognised volume in the enclosure. Disappointed as expected it to be compatible with larger drives.

The item arrived safely and just plugged it in and worked straight away. If I have to gripe I think the fan could be less noisey

Well made unit. Plugged in a hard drive, connected the esata cable in switched it on, booted the computer and there it was up and running. I wanted an esata external hard drive and this is cost effective way of getting one on a PC which only has a usb2 option. Obviously a bonus is you can easily use it for several hard drives by simply removing one through the front drop down door, which is spring loaded to hold the hard drive in place. As others have said the fan is somewhat noisy but as long as it does it's job I'll put up with it as I don't intend to have this drive on continuously.
So why only 4 stars? Because I can't comment on the longevity of this product.

Excellent product, was quick and easy to use, plug and play, slight downsides there's a low pitch whine from the fan and its limited to a 1.5TB hard drive, overall a great product for the price, does what it says on the tin!
