A very well made, sturdy device.
Tested with up to 2TB hard drives in each slot. Does not mean it wouldn't support larger drives, when those are available.
Supports several RAID modes (RAID 0 and RAID 1).
The device also provides other modes available that could make more sense when using only two drives, as RAID would mean always losing the capacity of one drive:
* SAFE33 mode: uses 30% of the smallest drive to create a resilient partition, with the rest non resilient. For instance, with two drives (1TB and 2TB), you would have 333GB of resilient safe partition, and 2.3TB of non resilient storage
* SAFE50 mode: uses 50% of the smallest drive to create a resilient partition, with the rest non resilient (so 500GB/2TB with the example above)
* BIG mode (shows both drives as one drive). No resilience: in case of failure, the content hosted on the failed drive is lost.
* JBOD: show each individual drive. No resilience: in case of failure, the content hosted on the failed drive is lost.
Configuration can be done at device/hardware level, via some DIP switches, or via the very neat software provided.
Some limitations (not necessarily the fault of the device):
1) limitation with Windows XP 32 bits: the maximum partition size with NTFS is 2TB. Therefore, if you have two 2TB drives in BIG mode, you would only be able to use 2TB in total. Solution is to use XP 64bits, Windows 7, or not to use hard drives bigger than 2TB, and use JBOD mode instead (showing each drive individually in Windows, but without any resilience). Not such limitation with Vista or Windows 7, even in 32 bits, as they can use GPT rather than MBR.
2) Some modes only work with esata if the esata interface can support multiple hosted drive. It is not the case from all PCs. For instance, the Acer Revo does not support it, and therefore would be restricted to USB 2. There are no restrictions for USB 2, all the modes would work and all the drives are visible.
3) There is an "ON/OFF" switch for the fan. The fan is not too loud, but can be heard when close so not silent. Fan does not support variable speed based on temperature: it's either on or off, and can only be controlled via the physical switch.
4) Device can be connected to esata or USB2, but not both modes are the same time, from same of two different PCs. You need to disconnect one of the cables, no buttons or switches
5) Not much bigger than a usual enclosure in width or height, but quite deeper. Bulky external power supply.
