Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

This eSATA/USB External Dual SATA Hot-swap Hard Drive Enclosure lets you install two 3.5in SATA (SATA, SATA II, SATA III) drives with support for a broad range of RAID applications including RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, JBOD, SAFE33 & SAFE50.Delivering maximum versatility, the Dual SATA External Hard Drive Enclosure can be connected to a computer using either eSATA or USB 2.0, and features built-in port multiplier support that allows both of the installed SATA hard drives to be connected using a single eSATA connection to your computer (Port Multiplier capable eSATA host controller required). The hot-swappable trays allow you to quickly remove and install hard drives without having to reboot or disconnect the drive enclosure. Plus, the dual SATA hard drive enclosure offers built-in RAID support, which will rebuild the RAID array in the event a new drive is inserted - providing seamless uninterrupted communication with your PC and data. The eSATA USB Dual SATA HDD Enclosure features a sturdy and attractive silver aluminum casing that looks great in any environment and helps protect installed SATA hard drives and their valuable data content from in-transit damage, while providing maximum heat dissipation.Using Terabyte hard drives? Don’t expose your Hard Drive and valuable data to unnecessary heat!StarTech.com''s eSATA/USB External Dual SATA Hot-swap Hard Drive Enclosure includes a large, built-in 50mm fan that re-distributes the heat build-up that''s generated as a result of typical drive operation, which is especially important when using high capacity hard drives, and faster “spinning" drives (i.e 7200 RPM), as it can help keep drives running cooler, which can preserve data integrity and the drive''s lifespan by reducing the chances of premature failures.

A very well made, sturdy device.

Tested with up to 2TB hard drives in each slot. Does not mean it wouldn't support larger drives, when those are available.

Supports several RAID modes (RAID 0 and RAID 1).
The device also provides other modes available that could make more sense when using only two drives, as RAID would mean always losing the capacity of one drive:

* SAFE33 mode: uses 30% of the smallest drive to create a resilient partition, with the rest non resilient. For instance, with two drives (1TB and 2TB), you would have 333GB of resilient safe partition, and 2.3TB of non resilient storage
* SAFE50 mode: uses 50% of the smallest drive to create a resilient partition, with the rest non resilient (so 500GB/2TB with the example above)
* BIG mode (shows both drives as one drive). No resilience: in case of failure, the content hosted on the failed drive is lost.
* JBOD: show each individual drive. No resilience: in case of failure, the content hosted on the failed drive is lost.

Configuration can be done at device/hardware level, via some DIP switches, or via the very neat software provided.

Some limitations (not necessarily the fault of the device):

1) limitation with Windows XP 32 bits: the maximum partition size with NTFS is 2TB. Therefore, if you have two 2TB drives in BIG mode, you would only be able to use 2TB in total. Solution is to use XP 64bits, Windows 7, or not to use hard drives bigger than 2TB, and use JBOD mode instead (showing each drive individually in Windows, but without any resilience). Not such limitation with Vista or Windows 7, even in 32 bits, as they can use GPT rather than MBR.

2) Some modes only work with esata if the esata interface can support multiple hosted drive. It is not the case from all PCs. For instance, the Acer Revo does not support it, and therefore would be restricted to USB 2. There are no restrictions for USB 2, all the modes would work and all the drives are visible.

3) There is an "ON/OFF" switch for the fan. The fan is not too loud, but can be heard when close so not silent. Fan does not support variable speed based on temperature: it's either on or off, and can only be controlled via the physical switch.

4) Device can be connected to esata or USB2, but not both modes are the same time, from same of two different PCs. You need to disconnect one of the cables, no buttons or switches

5) Not much bigger than a usual enclosure in width or height, but quite deeper. Bulky external power supply.

This was a wonderful find, my old self built computer failed on me so I rescued as much as I could to beef up my older computer also self built but this left me with 2 x 200GB Maxtor hard drives I purchased as a matched pair, now having the StarTech.com 3.5in eSATA USB Dual Removable SATA RAID External I now had somewhere to use them with my computer.

this is a fantastic bit of kit and was easy to set up just four dip switches and it was set up in a RAID set-up.

This product meets an important need - housing sata drives from previous pc's.

After it arrived i could not get it to work for some reason. On the plus side, Startech's website has a very good support chat function which responds rapidly.

The unit started working when i hit the reset button and it has been fine since then - touch wood

On usb 2.0 the transfer speed seems to be 15-25mb/sec.
On esata (my pc can only read one of the drives as the driver does not have mutli porting) the speed was 16mb/sec. I thought that would be much faster.
As a reference, when i transfer files between 2 pc internal hard drives the speed is ca 100mb/sec.

Hence i am mainly using it on usb

So very useful product and working well touch wood!
