5.0 out of 5 stars Excellemt product 9 Aug 2010
Tested in Windows 2008 R2 and Linux (2.6.32) works very well in both, driver download from startech's website required for Windows. Linux kernel recognised card and required no third party drivers. Note, this card doesn't fit in a 1x pci express slot and requires a 4x which isn't so common, however happily works in a 16x pci express slot.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best SATA disk controllers 23 Feb 2014
By Gordan

This controller (Marvell 88SX7042 based) has an excellent combination of good driver support in most operating systems, good PCIe bandwidth and full support for NCQ, and FIS switching for use with port multipliers. I use these with a port multiplier on each port, and there is no performance degradation as more disks are added, unlike with controllers that don't support FIS.

The only other controller comparable controllers in terms of driver, NCQ and FIS support are the ones based on Silicon Image 3132 chipset, but those bottleneck very badly on the PCIe side at less than half the bandwdith that the Marvell 88SX7042 manages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good tech for a reasonable price 16 Mar 2014

Arrived promptly, and installed into PCIEx4 slot with no problems.

Only minor issue, when i plugged a new unformatted 4tb drive into this card directly, it only saw it as a 2tb drive. So i swapped a couple of cables, formatted the drive to 4tb on another connection, then swapped it back to this one - and lo and behold - it now sees the full capacity (or as much as Windows lets us have, 3.725tb). Just a minor issue, but one to watch if you're using the larger drives.

Early days, but its all in and working, so can't complain.

Note, it comes with a low profile backplate if you need it, but only one Sata cable included. Drivers are on the included cd and also available on the Startech website.

3.0 out of 5 stars not a 6 port card 14 Jun 2011

This is a 4 port card with 6 connectors. It has jumpers to select which ports are connected. So you can have 2 eSATA and 2 SATA; or you can have 4 SATA; or 3 SATA and 1 eSATA. But only 4 drives max connected.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected!! 4 Jun 2012

I read the reviews before purchasing one. I was looking for a card that would allow me to connect (4) 3TB SATA drives internally. I've been having trouble finding one that works as promised or one without raid. It seemed that there were only two manufactured by different companies that were available on amazon. They were Rosewell and Startech, the former being the least expensive. So I chose the cheap route first and, mind you, this had the extra raid feature as a bonus to cost so I chose to purchase it immediately. Long story short, The Rosewell card would not allow me just plug in the SATA without first setting up raid with the software provided, and then turning off the raid feature within the bios. This would mean I would have to erase data on my drives first before I could read them seperatly on the card. I returned it and opted for the more expensive card, which was the Startech. The only gripe I have with this product is the price. I'm glad it doesn't have raid because I don't need it. But for the price, I understand why people are upset that it doesn't offer the feature. But the product works great.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good inexpensive SATA card. 13 Dec 2013

It is fast. It didn't cost very much. And it fits in a PCIE x4 slot. Seems like all high powered video cards take up 2 slots of room. And of course it covers up 1 of those short PCIE slots. This card works well in a long express slot. One thing to note about this card. It looks like a six port card. Those 2 eSATA ports available on its outside are optional. You can have 2 in and 2 out. Or you can use 4 internal. Most external drives are using USB 3 these days. ESATA is still faster if you can find an external hard drive that uses it.

I have 2 of these cards. Each runs in a different machine. There is a problem. If you boot or start computer without 1 or more drives attached and functioning, that drive will not show in Windows. That is, even if you reconnect drive it will not show. To persuade card to "find" drive again I install driver again. After reboot it shows up. This has happened to me at least 6 times. That first time I did not expect it. I went a few weeks before I realized 3 drives were missing. I've never seen this happen before. I'm running Win7 64bit. If you're thinking a drive is dead and it is running one of these cards, install driver again.
