I had the previous USB 2.0 version of this hard disk adapter and it worked well enough but it just wasn't fast enough for my needs.
I'm a tech who spends a lot of time doing data recovery jobs and it helps to be able to dock hard drives with the added performance gains of USB 3.0. I tested this one on a couple of SATA 7200RPM drives and was reaching average speeds of about 125MB/s which is consistent with USB 3.0 performance.
This version also comes with LED indicators to show disk activity when in use which is pretty handy. Everything needed comes in the box so I can easily attach SATA or IDE drives in both laptop and desktop form factor.
It works very well and is worth every penny. Highly recommended.

**Update**

Shortly after reviewing this product I discovered a problem which I thought I would post as it might help others who own this or are thinking or purchasing it.
I originally tested the device with SATA drives which worked flawlessly but when trying to data scrub a couple of old IDE (PATA) drives I found they could not be detected.
I made sure that power was running to the hard drives, USB connections were secure and IDE jumper pins were set correctly but still no joy. I bought two of these adapters and both had the exact same problem when testing on two separate workstations which made it highly unlikely that it was a device failure.
At this point I decided to call StarTech who have a UK local rate support number listed on the product manual, handy!
I was on hold for less than 1 minute when a support rep with an American accent asked me to give him the product number and a description of the problem.

Unlike a lot of adaptors out there, this one is actually of a decent build quality. Power pack comes with 3 different mains plug connectors (3 pin for UK, 2 pin round and 2 pin slot) and the connectors for plugging into your hard drive are also properly screened and not the flimsy type which look like the cables will fall part!
IDE or Sata with added switches to turn the power on/off to whatever device you plug in.

The main connector block is also quite sturdy for what it is. 3 led lights (one for IDE, one for SATA and one for USB) which blink when any activity is going on.

Instructions are simple so even someone not technically minded should have no issues using this product.

All in all, a good buy and so far I've retrieved data off 6 defunct drives (you'll have to google how to get a dead drive working again).

Money well spent

It worked perfectly, I had a bunch of old hard drives from the late 2000's which needed accessing and this is the tool I used. The dispatch time was very quick and it was at my door the next day. The USB 3.0 does come handy and the L.E.D indicators tell you when the hard drive is in use.
I would reccomend this product to anyone who needs to access a old/new hard drive

Worked as soon as I plugged it in to a SATA drive. I located the data I needed and started copying.

Two minutes later it stopped as the drive randomly disappeared.

Tried reconnecting to both SATA and IDE drives with the same result, on the rare occasions it connected, it dropped out after a few seconds.

Returning this garbage for a refund.

Having used similar devices over the years I found some of the devices on sale nowadays cheap and nasty. The StarTech however is not. It is of much better construction and works very well. It's always useful to have one of these adapters in the toolbox and I can recommend this one.
