I recently changed my computer and couldn't run my DV camcorder for lack of a firewire connection. My computer is an Acer Aspire X1420 desktop, which has a low tower half the size of the usual. After some checking, including that there was a PCI express slot available (the card needs a x1), I ordered the firewire.
As expected the card arrived on time, and all the bits were present - firewire card, small instruction booklet and spare small mounting bracket (the big one attached to the card is for normal fitting, the small one is for low desktops). The card fitted very easily, though I had to modify the shoulders of the mounting bracket as they stopped the card from slotting fully home, it took a couple of minutes, then I re-attached the modified small bracket to the card. The only part not present which I had to supply was the bracket screw (attaches the mounting bracket to the computer case). These are easy to get, just go to a local computer servicing shop, ask for a PCI card bracket mounting screw and they'll give one for nothing.
Windows 7 recognised the card immediately and loaded drivers. A check of Device Manager showed it was present without problems. I connected my Sony DV camcorder and away it went, my editing equipment worked fine giving full control of the camcorder.
So straightforward and without problem!
