1.0 out of 5 stars FAKE. 18 April 2013

This seller (Amazon) is knowingly selling fake goods, you dont get the advertised cable by starTech! You get a knock-off chinese cable (Pluscom brand I recieved), with a very sticky barcode lable with startech printed on it carefully placed over the real lable. Its not backed by startech (no 2 years), theres no nut connection to screw togeother the cables (just another screw), the prolific chip detector from prolific would not even read the chip, it dose not even look like the startech cable. If the prolific chip is real (which I Doubt), the cd is a outdated waste of time, the upto date divers from Prolific do not work with this adapter nor does it work with windows 7 64bit. BECAUSE ITS FAKE BEWARENED!

This little gem really saved my bacon on more than one occasion. Laptop/notebook builders these days don't put the RS232 port on their products any more, much to my dismay, but this adaptor is even better. RS232 port on-demand, so to speak. Plug it in, launch minicom, and go. That's all there's too it. No use for the driver disc when you use it on Linux, it just works. The kernel names the device /dev/ttyUSB0 for the first, /dev/ttyUSB1 for the second, and so on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal product for your Cisco Lab 13 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase
I bought this item after having previously tried and failed to get my new Serial ports to work in Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I took the CD out of the pack followed the installation instructions and as soon as I installed the cable in the USB port it picked it up straight away!

Could not ask for more!

I am using this to manage Cisco routers and switches in my Cisco lab and I'm seriously thinking about buying a couple more.

Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works ok on my Win7proX64 5 Dec 2013
I use this daily, to program cisco routers from a windows 7 x64 pro.

To be honest for the money they are asking for this I wouldn't expect it to be branded. The cables got to be a couple of quid, let alone the electronics. Suffice to say, there is a driver for it for windows 7 64 bit. It does work (least mine does!).

I would suggest that if people are having problems then it could be that this is part of a bad batch which is could explain why its so cheap. So if you don't need one immediately take your chance. You may have to send it back till you get a working one.

I can only report on my experience and that is good.So 4 out of 5 stars just because I like to keep one star in reserve for that special something.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fab lab modela 29 Nov 2013

I bought this cable for the fablab under recommendations to run a modela cutter. The cutter did not work but I don't think the cable was at fault. It was neat well constructed and therefore I cannot fault the item itself but I also cannot praise its function.

I could not get the computer to recognise this device despite loading the enclosed CD and also attempting to instal it manually ,following the printable instructions on the CD. I failed. Repeated attempts to contact the support team of the manufacturer received no response

As most Laptops no longer have a Com port this is the perfect solution. Easy to install and now allows me to conect to a multitude of Network Switches at my customers sites.
