As this device involves routing keyboard and mouse inputs into a single output for each machine, it's partly dependent on driver software being installed and correctly on each machine. Given different operating systems (I had windows XP on one, and Windows 7 on the other) and configurations this isn't necessarily straightforward, and will involve adding yet another application at start up to the ever-growing list that accumulates over time.

Starting with a postive, when this works it's fine. I use it to share keyboard, mouse and monitor with my laptop. I had hoped to share the speakers as well but the audio cables are tied up with the video lead, which would be fine for the desktop but as my laptop has an HDMI out, not a great big DVI socket, the included leads can't be used and so I don't have access to sound switching.
The main problem is that the unit occasionally gives up. The monitor switching works but the keyboard and mouse don't. Restoring normal service is a matter of uninstalling and installing drivers multiple times, powering on an off until eventually it decides to work again. Instead of simply switching the keyboard and mouse, there's some not-so-clever electronics inside that as to be in the right mood to work.
I selected this device for the ability to switch sound - I can't. I selected it so as to use a single USB to connect keyboard and mouse to the laptop - it doesn't work reliably.
I wouldn't buy this product again.

This item replaced a Belkin unit that was USB but VGA only (no DVI). It worked out of the box, the software allowing selection of PC by editable key combination and allowing the audio to be fed from one source (I have the small PC connected to the monitor speakers and the main PC to the 5.1 sound system) The Belkin started changing between units on its own, no override working, so had to go.
The only let down is that you can not disable the default change over keys, ScrL-ScrL as I use Scroll for other functions.
The good thing is that it runs a high resolution monitor (27") as well as allowing full function of my Logitech G15 keyboard (with all the mapping) and the multi button MX1000.
Swap between PCs is quick (about 5 secs to settle down) and can be done from keyboard or using the front button.
