Manufacturer's Description

This IDE to SATA Drive Adapter Kit offers a simple way to install Serial ATA hard drives using an available IDE port - a cost-effective solution for using newer SATA drives on a legacy computer or a computer with all SATA connections already in use. This dual channel bridge lets you connect two high-speed SATA drives without the cost and effort of upgrading your IDE (Parallel ATA) motherboard, while minimizing the space required for IDE cable connections - helping to improve airflow within the case which in turn helps to optimize system performance.Plus, the IDE to SATA Drive Motherboard Adapter includes a power connector and SATA data cables, to ensure the upgrade to SATA is easy!*PLEASE NOTE that SATA drives connected to the PATA2SATA2 IDE to SATA Drive Motherboard Adapter require the customary connection to the computer power supply. If the power supply does not provide the appropriate connection, the SATAPOWADAP 6" LP4 Male to Serial ATA Power Adapter will be required.

Having bought a single SATA adapter "IOMAX Bi-Directional IDE / SATA Converter (Connect IDE Drive to SATA Motherboard or SATA Drive to IDE Motherboard)"

[...]

which was giving all sorts of controller errors I purchased this dual SATA adapter for an ageing IDE system.

This product has been working flawlessly for a few months now and seems well worth the few extra pounds to have a reliable controller, plus you can connect two SATA devices as a bonus.

Definitely worth buying if you require connecting one or two SATA devices to your IDE controller.

Works fine and reliable 20 April 2011

I've noticed a lot of people reporting various problems with this product on the internet and, from what I can tell, most of the time it's because of incorrect application or installation on the part of the user. I've installed this product on 6 different motherboards with 4 different types of SATA hard drives and have had no difficulties with any of them.

First, this device is meant to allow someone to connect 1 or 2 SATA drives to a dual IDE port on the motherboard. Not the reverse.

Second, if you are installing only 1 SATA drive, it must be connected to the first SATA connector, (the one on the opposite side of the board from the SP4 power connector). If you're installing 2 SATA drives, then this port is the Master and the SATA port in the middle is the Slave.

Third, this unit requires its own power. The LP4 to SP4 power adapter supplied with the unit must be plugged into the SP4 power connection on the unit and an available LP4 power connection from the power supply. This connector isn't meant to power the SATA drives. They must have their own power connection from the power supply.

Fourth, if you happen to have one of the older units, the jumper on it was never implemented (per StarTech). It does nothing. The newer units don't even have the jumper pins mounted on the unit.

Lastly, some older motherboards require the SATA hard drive be limited to 1.5 Gb/s speed in order to "sense" the drive depending on the model of the drive. This can be done with a jumper setting that can be looked up on the manufacturer's website of whatever model SATA drive is being used.

Hopefully this will help some people out with problems they're having with this product.

IDE to SATA Adapter 7 Aug 2011

Although this technology works in the industry the two units received did not work on the two separate computers and 4 test HDD's being tested. The distributor's representative is still working with me on a resolve to this problem with another style of IDE to SATA adapter.
