Works but flawed 28 Aug 2011

I finally thought I had a reasonable USB KVM switch which would alllow me to start upgrading to Win 7 and USB keyboard/mouse. The KVM switch is okay, looks like a spider with cables exiting at all angles and was working fine in my exisiting setup so I bought a new core-i7 machine with Win 7 that I had my eye on and thats when things started to go astray.

The KVM would switch between the Win 7 and XP machines without issue but switching back to the Win 7 machine it would lose the screen resolution setting and needed manually resetting, this rapidly became a pain so started investigating. The XP machines have the monitor defined correctly in windows but the Win 7 machine just thinks it is a default monitor, tried updating monitor driver but Win 7 just said not valid for 64bit OS, wasted time with the PC/monitor vendor to no benefit.

Finally it seems that Win 7 keeps sending/requesting EDID data via the Display Data Channel (DDC) which is not supported by the KVM switch so switching between machines is seen as a disconnect/re-connect of the monitor, XP does not do this repeatedly so once it is happy with the monitor, switching is okay but not Win 7.

I could buy a EDID/DDC emulator but that is expensive and is needed for every Win 7 machine so I have ordered another KVM switch which the manufacturer says is Win 7 compatible so fingers crossed it will work..

If buying a KVM switch for use with Win 7 check it supports fulltime EDID/DDC emulation otherwise you'll be frustrated, as usual Microsoft is at the bottom of all this with no easy/cheap fix so everyone has to spend money unnecessarily on new hardware

Switching can take a few seconds and occasionally one of the connected laptops, the one running Vista, flips back into local screen mode while it is not the machine being used. This is easily remedied by cycling the display (the familiar Fn F7 or Fn F8 or some similar combination on most laptops) and does not happen often enough to be a real irritation. I am running a desktop XP machine, a Vista laptop and an XP laptop through the switch and it is a blessing. Video quality on a high-spec BenQ 24 inch monitor at 1920x1200 is indistinguishable from a direct connection. The StarTech runs cool and, in my case at least, requires no external power - hoorah! All installations proceeded without need for the supplied software, which I have not yet bothered to investigate. There was a bit of a delay during auto-installation in some cases which made me think things were not working; but they were. Have not tried the audio but confident it will work. The switch looks a bit untidy with the cables to the monitor, mouse and keyboard coming out of the front, but this is the price of having such a compact unit. Overall very satisfied especially as this is a cheap example of such a KVM switch. This StarTech product makes my life easier every day, came with all the cables it needs of decent quality and reasonable length, and causes no trouble - what more to ask? I don't think any of the drawbacks are severe enough to withhold the final star, particularly at the price.

I am successfully using this Starview SV411KUSB 4 port USB KVM switch for 3 machines (1 slot spare): 2 notebooks (XP, Apple Mac) and 1 desktop machine (dual-boot Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.04) sharing an LG LCD 22" 1920x1080 monitor and a Logitech EX100 wireless keyboard and mouse.

The notebooks use the monitor for extended desktop as they both have been setup for expanded desktop/split screen whereby the monitor provides extra desktop space.

This setup with the SV411KUSB perfectly. Plug in the VGA and USB end of the cables provide to each machine and the other VGA end to the box. Use the buttons on the SV411KUSB to select each machine in turn to setup as usual (i.e as if they were directly hooked up to the monitor, keyboard and mouse): get each machine to recognise the USB keyboard and mouse and to detect the monitor for which to expand the desktop into. Then it's all done thereafter.

Tip: make sure the cables are plugged in the correct way around.

Works perfectly, very good value for money.

Even though my desktop has DVI and HDMI and the Mac has DisplayPort, I think that VGA is going to be around for a while yet. I use a DisplayPort to VGA adapter for connecting the Mac into my setup.
