Switching can take a few seconds and occasionally one of the connected laptops, the one running Vista, flips back into local screen mode while it is not the machine being used. This is easily remedied by cycling the display (the familiar Fn F7 or Fn F8 or some similar combination on most laptops) and does not happen often enough to be a real irritation. I am running a desktop XP machine, a Vista laptop and an XP laptop through the switch and it is a blessing. Video quality on a high-spec BenQ 24 inch monitor at 1920x1200 is indistinguishable from a direct connection. The StarTech runs cool and, in my case at least, requires no external power - hoorah! All installations proceeded without need for the supplied software, which I have not yet bothered to investigate. There was a bit of a delay during auto-installation in some cases which made me think things were not working; but they were. Have not tried the audio but confident it will work. The switch looks a bit untidy with the cables to the monitor, mouse and keyboard coming out of the front, but this is the price of having such a compact unit. Overall very satisfied especially as this is a cheap example of such a KVM switch. This StarTech product makes my life easier every day, came with all the cables it needs of decent quality and reasonable length, and causes no trouble - what more to ask? I don't think any of the drawbacks are severe enough to withhold the final star, particularly at the price.
