Product Description

Product Description

The PATA2SATA3 is a bi-directional SATA IDE adapter/converter that lets you connect a Serial ATA drive to a legacy IDE port, or an IDE drive to a SATA motherboard port.A cost-effective solution for upgrading existing IDE systems to support SATA hard drives or optical drives, the SATA/IDE adapter eliminates the expense of having to purchase a controller card while saving the expansion slot that would be required for card installation. In addition to SATA hard drive installation, the adapter can be reversed in order to connect older IDE drives to a newer SATA-enabled motherboard, making it easy to retrieve old files from a previous system.

I bought this product to enable me to connect an EIDE drive from my old PC to a new PC recently bought which only had SATA drive connections on the motherboard. The Unit fitted easily onto the EIDE drive and connected to the motherboard with a standard SATA cable. The SATA cable was supplied along with the additional power cables necessary. It all worked straight off with no issues or problems. I highly recommend this product it arrived promptly and simply worked.

I bought this item blindly (though I had read few reviews) but I figured it was worth the risk for the small price rather than throwing away a perfectly good hard drive. Installed it and it worked perfectly well (so far). Only thing missing from the package (hence the 4 stars) was an adapter cable for converting molex four pin to SATA 15 pin to suit my SATA drive. At first glance it looked like this cable was included in the package but during installation I realised it was for powering the adapter itself. So if like me you want to install a SATA drive on an IDE motherboard then buy the power adapter cable as well because the molex 4 pin plug does not fit SATA drives.

Quality product. Worked on hardware where a cheaper, non-branded device failed completely. Gave a new lease of live to two legacy CD/IDE drives on a modern mother board. Simple to installed, well documented. Recommended.

The product worked pretty much as expected for my purposes. I wanted to use a legacy computer to run my SATA HDD. My computer only has IDE connections on the Motherboard.

A couple of points:

1. The instructions refer to a DIP switches on the unit to set it to master or slave. The instructions did not have the diagram. The full instructions are here:

[...]

2.The master selection worked fine, but I could not get the slave to work until I used the "cable select" setting.

3.A power cable adaptor wasn't included for me convert a MOLEX (old 4 pin connection) to SATA to power the drive.
Its not expensive, but in my case I needed it.

This is an example of one with two SATA connections:

Molex Internal Power Splitter Cable

Pretty pleased with the way it works. Its just sitting in my computer doing its job.

This IDE to SATA adapter is useful when you need to connect some old device that uses an IDE interface port to newer mother-board that has olny SATA ports.
Or possibly the other way around. In my case I had to connect old DVD-drive with a new motherboard. Fortunately it worked right away but there are many reports
saying that similar devices work only one way or they don't work at all. So triple check before you buy. When this starts to work an orange LED will lite up.
When information is being transfered green LED is flashing. Careful when moving your hands around this adapter, even though it's fully inserted
it bends very easily. InOtherWords FLIMSY.

At first I could not get this item to work so I packed it away. The failure was my fault, I had not made sure that the jumper on the drive was explicitly set to Master. Once that was realised the device worked quite well. The drive did not seem to be working at its usual speed, I'm not sure about that.

Being able to extract data from that drive saved me a lot of agrevation making it well worth the cost of the unit.

I ordered two of these SATA IDE adaptors as I was buidig a new computer and my two DVD writers were IDE and
the new motherboard was all SATA. On plugging in the adaptor the computer would not switch on properly
and locked up on the first screen. This happened every time so I had no alternative bit to return the
adapters to Amazon and purchase two new DVD writers (SATA).
