Book Description

A tale of two Sith: At long last, the story of the mysterious Sith Lord, Darth

Plagueis, and his apprentice, Darth Sidious, is revealed!

--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

He was the most powerful Sith lord who ever lived.
But could he be the only one who never died?

“Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise that he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.”
—Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith

Darth Plagueis: one of the most brilliant Sith Lords who ever lived. Possessing power is all he desires. Losing it is the only thing he fears. As an apprentice, he embraces the ruthless ways of the Sith. And when the time is right, he destroys his Master—but vows never to suffer the same fate. For like no other disciple of the dark side, Darth Plagueis learns to command the ultimate power . . . over life and death.

Darth Sidious: Plagueis’s chosen apprentice. Under the guidance of his Master, he secretly studies the ways of the Sith, while publicly rising to power in the galactic government, first as Senator, then as Chancellor, and eventually as Emperor.

Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious, Master and acolyte, target the galaxy for domination—and the Jedi Order for annihilation. But can they defy the merciless Sith tradition? Or will the desire of one to rule supreme, and the dream of the other to live forever, sow the seeds of their destruction?

Wow! Once again James Luceno has confirmed my belief that he is the best Star Wars author. I loved how the plot synced with other novels e.g Cloak of Deception, where an event that is taking place in another novel is being referenced at the same time in this one. Loose ends, such as Sifo-Dyas and the clone army, and character expansions, such as Darth Maul and King Veruna, will greatly interest Star Wars fans.
It was refreshing to read from the point of view of the Sith for a change. Darth Plagueis was a most intriguing character. The machinations of the Sith were complex and how they turned out was riveting to read.
Definitely one of my favourite Star Wars books, if not THE favourite.

A more appropriate title for this book may well have been Episode 0:The Rise of Palpatine as really the novel is about him. The book occurs in three parts firstly Darth Plagueis' final moments as an apprentice to Darth Tenebrous and his discovery of Palpatine, then ten years or so later as the two Sith's machinations continue. Finally the story arrives just before The Phantom Menace and shadows episode 1 through to its climax.
The novel is rich in Star Wars culture with many familiar characters from the films present. Particularly enjoyable are the chapters with the as yet uncorrupted Dooku and the tying up of a few loose threads from episode 1 and 2.

This is a book I really enjoyed reading and on the way picking up a few answers to questions of the films that I'd asked myself and friends. I don't want to give spoilers away, so I will simply say that this book is effectively the prequel to Episode 1.

I would happily recommend this to any Star Wars fans, especially those that enjoyed the Darth Bane trilogy and want to learn about the Star Wars story from the Sith's point of view - After all you need to hear both sides of a story to form a fair opinion :-)

For non Star Wars fans it's also a good read and in terms of the story you don't need to have read Star Wars books based before or after this book in the Star Wars timeline - It does add more if you have read those books based before it or in the same period, but not essential. Granted if you don't know anything about Jedi or Sith and the Force you'll be a little confused perhaps to start with.

Excellent :-)
