4.0 out of 5 stars It a whole new world 15 Nov. 2003
By A Customer
This game is astonishing. I don't believe there's ever been anything like it.
It was launched earlier this year in the US. There were many complaints about screen and processing errors - 'bugs' - and about the difficulty of 'power gaming' which means rising to the top of whichever particular race or profession your online character sought to attain so that you can beat up everyone else.
Having now played this game on the two recently established European servers, I honestly believe that these complaints are the result neither of slapdash programming nor of lackadaiscal planning.
The opposite is true. This game is so astonishingly sophisticated that some programming errors are understandable - and, in my experience, Sony's server staff has manfully corrected and balanced day-on-day. As for 'game play', no, it's not for kids or for 'power gamers' - it's no 'shoot 'em up'. It's far, far more. And if you wish to advance, you have to be able to do a lot more than dodge, duck and shoot. This game is not about clicking and pointing quickly.
It isn't really complex - it's easy ot learn - but it is nuanced. It's not like the previous gold standards in Massive Online Gaming. Here, you don't just interact with the game system, you have to interact with other players - they support you in battle against wonderfully realised alient creatures, they build your weapons, they design your clothes, even your tattoos. And they do more; they can run entire cities as Mayor and Council, they can train giant lizards for you to ride and they they survet barren wastelands for the minerals needed to feed the factories that supply the shops that sell every necessary item to each player character.
Since the US launch, the game has been updated on a daily basis.

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE 1 May 2005
By A Customer
To all potential customers, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME under any circumstances. This WAS the best online game until a week ago when a new upgrade changed the game completely. It is basically Everquest 2 with ray guns now. The entire interface has changed, combat has changed and it is impossible to play. 75% of customers opposed the change but SOE ignored us. It is unstable and no fun. I have played for 18 months and like thousands of others cancelled my accounts. SOE are deleting negative comments and suspending accounts to hide the truth, which is why we are using this forum to let you all know. They have the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE i have ever had the misfortune of seeing.
Long term players are leaving in droves and SOE will not address the problems. Save your money, or at the very least, spend it on a good game. Choose anything but this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst decision possible 5 May 2005
I bought SWG and played it for a week and was getting into it and progressing my character and having fun running around the Star Wars Universe. Until the combat upgrade. The upgrade ruined the whole game - It is harder to progress your character solo now; I was unable to use ANY armour and had to buy back a load of feeble, lower level weaps, as the ones I had, my character was no longer able to use; the healing professions are more or less redundant and pointless and the whole feel of the pre-CU has been changed for the worse - it is aimed at point & click kiddies rather than experienced Multiplayers. I did have an account set up to continue playing the game, after the introductory month, but have since removed my subs for this.
Many players protested against the CU implementation after playing the beta version, but Sony Online Entertainment(SOE) ignored these and went ahead regardless. When players commented on the forums against the CU, the threads were rapidly deleted. SOE didn't want to know. Thanks a lot...
Maybe they thought the game was actually fun rather than a pain in the A.
In summary - DON'T buy this game. If you want a MMORPG, try Guild Wars or Project Entropia instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Star Wars Galaxies: Prepare to be immersed! 10 Feb. 2004
I've been playing computer games since I was about 8 and only rarely does one come along that blows me away. SWG is one of those games!
The first thing to say is that this is an MMORPG based on Star Wars. Sounds obvious, but I've seen some people complain that it is too Star Wars like (!) and other complain that it is too much like a role-playing game!
To make the most out of this amazing game, you will need to invest time and be prepared to make friends. You will not get very far alone and you will have a lot more fun interacting with others.
Also, be prepared to work hard - power does not come easy and you will need to have the right strategy AND energy to get to the higher echelons of the game (like Bounty Hunter and Mayor) but when you do, there will be no looking back.
Becoming a Jedi is nearly impossible - as it should be! If you just want a cheap thrill, SWG will disappoint you, but if you want game that will occupy you for months on end, will test your mental and coordination skills and give you a chance to 'live' Star Wars, this is it.
It gets even better every day and you will never run out of things to do!

4.0 out of 5 stars It is great, once you get going... 11 Jan. 2004
By A Customer
Once you get the game up and running you can begin creating your new character. This process is very enjoyable as you can fully customise all of the characters aspects as well as what job you want the character to start off with. When you start the game though, for new players, it can be quite confusing and a bit boring, running across the planet on your own, ocassionally running in to a few other characters.
It matters where you start the game, as this determines your first impressions. The thing you need to do though is to interact with other characters. Interacting and making friends will make the game a lot more enjoyable as you can work together making those skills easier to reach.
I advise getting a friend to play the game with you from the start. Once you get past all the above you will find an amazing game that you will love playing.
