Book Description

Launching a bold, new Star Wars story arc for fans of the Legacy of the Force series and the franchise's most popular characters, Luke, Han, and Leia.

Product Description

THE EXTRAORDINARY NEXT EPISODE IN THE STAR WARS GALAXY BEGINS HERE ...

The Galactic Alliance is in crisis. Worse still, the very survival of the Jedi Order is under threat.

In a shocking move, Chief of State, Natasi Daala, orders the arrest of Luke Skywalker for failing to prevent Jacen Solo's turn to the dark side. But it's only the first blow in an anti-Jedi backlash fueled by a hostile government and a media-driven witch hunt. Facing conviction, Luke must strike a bargain with the calculating Daala - his freedom in exchange for his exile from Coruscant and from the Jedi Order.

Though forbidden to intervene in Jedi affairs, Luke is determined to keep history from being repeated. With his son, Ben, at his side, Luke sets out to unravel the shocking truth behind Jacen Solo's corruption and downfall. But the secrets he uncovers among the enigmatic Force mystics of the distant world Dorin may bring his quest - and life as he knows it - to a sudden end. And all the while, another Jedi Knight, consumed by a mysterious madness, is headed for Coruscant on a fearsome mission that could doom the Jedi Order . . . and devastate the entire galaxy.

Set two years after the conclusion of Legacy of the Force and Darth Cadeus' reign of galactic terror, Outcast begins with unification negotiations between the Galactic Alliance and the Imperial Remnant. Luke Skywalker, disgraced in the eyes of the GA leadership as a result of Jacen Solo's murderous rise to power is exiled and cut off from the Jedi Order he has rebuilt. Meanwhile, Jedi Knights are experiencing psychotic breakdowns, making all Jedi potential ticking timebombs.

The Good: The pace of the story is good with short sharp chapters moving the story along nicely. As the opening book in a series it sets the scene very well. In particular the hints at how these books are going to link up with the excellent Star Wars: Legacy comic book series. We see the earliest hints of the foundation of the Imperial Knights and the Fel Dynasty for instance. The plot and subplots are fairly engaging, with the great mystery surrounding Jacen Solo's fall to the darkside keeping the reader hooked. There is one particular scene between the GA Chief of State and Luke in which they discuss the Jedi's penchant for slicing off the limbs of bad guys which raises the novel above the average. It is an interesting exploration of the Jedi's role in the Galaxy, and a wonderful explanation as to why people in the Galaxy Far, Far Away would be rather less enthusiatic about the Jedi than people in our own Galaxy.

The Bad: There are parts of this novel that simply do not stack up. Firstly Luke Skywalker's disgrace and exile from the GA is hard to swallow. Having defeated the Sith time and again and led the fight against the Yuuzhan Vong, you have to wonder just how many times you have to save the Galaxy before people start to trust you. The subplot on Kessel, involving Han, Leia and Lando seems rather a waste of time and energy. In short they spend half the book desparatley trying to save the dying planet of Kessel, enlisting the help of New Republic-era heroes like Wedge Antilles to deactivate a planet-destroying bomb. Ultimatley though Kessel is a barren wasteland owned by Lando, a man of incredible wealth already, and so we're expected to be enthralled and moved by what amounts to our heroes desparatley trying to ensure that Lando remains slighly richer than he already is. It's very hard to get excited in that context.

The characterisations are very, very weak throughout. It is almost impossible to distinguish between the banter between Jaina and Jag, Han and Leia or Ben and Luke. Not only that but Luke Skywalker appears more aggressive, light-hearted and, at times, smug than he has been portrayed in the previous EU novels. He seems a lot less mature and impressive that he did during the Dark Nest, for example, and it can be very grating.

Overall however, this is a good, if not a great, novel in the Star Wars series that sets the scene for the rest of the series. It's not as good an opening novel as the brilliant Betrayal was for the Legacy of the Force series was, however, it is a solid effort and we can only hope that without the utter rubbish of Karen Traviss' Mandalorian fanfiction that this will prove to be a good addition to the EU canon.

Fate of the Jedi: Outcast is the first in a new nine book series made up entirely of hardcovers. The writing team this time around is made up of Aaron Allston, Christie Golden and Troy Denning. This series picks up two years after the conlusion Legacy of the Force and shrotly after the stand alone adventure Millennium Falcon. It's focus unsurpringly is the Jedi Order and the consequences of Jacen Solos brief attempt to bring his vision of order to galaxy as the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. The Galactic Alliance is reforging economic and diplomatic ties both within its own borders and without and it is against the backdrop of the start of the first Unifcation Summit on Coruscant that the story begins.

Aaron Allston kicks the series off with a really enjoyable read showing a different tone to that of the Legacy of the Force series straight off the bat. This was good to see because although I hold the previous series as one of my favourite Star Wars storylines I was worried Fate of the Jedi would be too similar. This lighter tone is achieved by switching between the high tension drama of the events unfolding on Coruscant involving the Jedi Order, Luke and Ben Skywalkers journey to uncover the reason for Jacens fall to the dark side and Leia, Han and Allana travelling to Kessel to help Lando with his spice mining operation. It gave a refreshing mix of naratives that allowed Aaron Allston to use a wide range of characters. The Kessel plotline especially gives us the opportunity to catch up with a lot of famous starfighter pilots from both sides of the galactic civil war.

The plot on Coruscant feeds into Luke and Bens journey and makes for what appears to be the focus for the series main plotline. The new Galactic Alliance Chief of State Natasi Daala (former Imperial Admiral) is very wary of the Jedi Order and has charged Luke Skywalker with dereliction of duty for letting Jacen Solo fall to the dark side. Luke negotiates his freedom in exchange for being exiled from the Jedi Order for ten years unless he can prove what made Jacen fall. This plotline is very well handled and as someone who was concerned that this plot could turn into nothing more than Jedi bashing I was very impressed. It deals with the consequences of the last series, that the Jedi Order must shoulder some responsibility but is aware that they are not the only ones, all the while telling an enjoyable story.

My favourite part of the book is when Luke Skywalker and his son Ben visit the Baran Do Sages. We get a great look at the developing relationship between father and son after the recent tragedy they have both endured and we get a look at the Kel Dor homeworld. However a close second would have to be the chapters focusing on the Jedi Order on Coruscant as Jedi Knight Valin Horn succumbs to a strange psychosis that seems to effect only Jedi or force users. This mystery is bound to play a major role throughout the whole series and it makes for an interesting new threat to our heroes.

Aaron Allston again has written an engrossing first book with his ability to weave action, drama and humour. I highly recommend it and look forward to where the next eight books lead us.

This is the kick-off of another "era" of Star Wars books, this one set really close to the previous one (legacy of the force), something like 44 years after A New Hope. As you'd expect, it starts with an event which seems a bit far-fetched, but which probably by later books will seem to be totally routine.

The end result is that Luke and his son Ben go on the first step of a grand adventure (not really doing anything so much as just being there), Han and various buddies have a little adventure with plenty of mystery and danger, and Jaina (Han's daughter) has a brief mission which seems to largely be an excuse to catch up with several Jedi characters on how hints have been since the last series. The narrative has a good, steady pace after an initial stuttering start, and is very readable through to the end. The conceit which starts off the book - that a perfectly sensible mainstream Jedi is suddenly convinced that all his Jedi friends and relatives are well-disguised impostors - is sadly not expanded on, although it does motivate some of the plot.

So, this is one of the good ones.
