You can jam with the Cantina Band or create your own songs, all the while drumming with Jar Jar to outwit the battle droids. This program contains tricky tangrams; when they're complete, each picture turns into a real scene from Episode I. It's also possible to print your own illustrated stories in the process of programming C3PO's memory. With extraordinary graphics, great sound, and so many different puzzles and printables, all of these content-rich games are sure to delight and challenge the Padawan learners in your galaxy. --Jill Lightner
From Children's Software Revue®
With the richly orchestrated music and graphics of the Star Wars Phantom Menace film serving as a backdrop, this program presents six multilevel activities that playfully introduce hard-to-teach concepts. Yoda's challenge is to finish all of the activities and earn a certificate of completion, presented by Yoda himself at the end of the game. Shallow premise aside, the activities break new ground in technology and learning. Two of the activities deal with musical concepts. In one, children must stop evil Droids from advancing by matching a rhythm pattern, tapping it out Morse code-style with the mouse. A second game teaches note names and chord structures to the tune of the funky Star Wars bar music.
Three other activities offer logic puzzles. Race at Theed presents a strong problem-solving experience by asking children to choose the best pathway through a maze. Gungan Caves sends kids underground where they must follow a series of written instructions and use an overhead view map to find a hidden jewel. The Queen's Computer is one of the best tangram puzzles we've seen since Math Workshop, where children maneuver geometric shapes back into their cookie cutter outlines. There's also a unique reading comprehension game in which children use the shapes of words to fill in a sentence.
Features include the ability to save a child's place, and closed captioning. Overall, the depth of the games and the valuable educational experience they provide makes this an exceptional program.
Teaches: logic, music, reading, note names, rhythm, geometry
