Product Description

Star Wars: Empire at War: Star Wars:
Empire at War puts the power to command an entire war for the Star Wars galaxy in the hands of players, giving them the freedom to determine how they play the game within the completely scalable and accessible gameplay. Set a few years before the events of Episode IV A New Hope, LucasArts' new PC game lets players wage war on ground and in space, as well as experience the creation of the Rebel Alliance, the strengthening of the Empire and the beginnings of the Galactic Civil War. All of the gameplay and action within Star Wars: Empire at War is persistent, meaning that strategic and tactical elements from previous events will have a permanent effect on the galaxy. In addition to the single-player campaign mode, the game includes a two-player campaign mode and online skirmish modes for up to eight players.

Forces of Corruption:
The rebels have just destroyed the Death Star, and the galaxy is in turmoil. As an aspiring underworld figure named Tyber Zann, spread corruption throughout the galaxy using new strategic gameplay elements to influence other factions, steal their funds, slow their production, spy on them and more, all en route to becoming the most notorious criminal leader since Jabba The Hutt. Exciting new land-tactical options like customizable, upgradeable bases and guerilla warfare allow for innovative battlefield tactics. Take command of and confront new fighting units for all factions (rebel B-Wings, Imperial Tie Interceptors, Darth Vader's Executor Super Star Destroyer and more), and take down anyone who stands in your way of ruling the underworld, be they new battlefield heroes like Luke Skywalker and Yoda or the forces of you most bitter rival - Jabba. Destroy capital ships with the awesome firepower of the second Death Star, and satiate Tyber's drive for the deadliest capital ship in the galaxy, a devastatingly powerful Super Star Destroy

My thoughts..... 7 Aug 2010
Fun:
To be sure this is a great game and one you can certainly lose hours on. Who wouldn't want to build the Death Star and then start blowing up Rebel Bases?

Having said that after your first few games and you've got your head around the various functions of the game it does become a bit easy to win.
Regardless of which faction you play as the computer is far too easy to beat and there does come a tipping point when its painfully clear that the computer cannot hope to turn the tide which turns the game into a boring mopping up exercise for you the player - sorry but if your playing as the Empire don't expect the rebels to suddenly blow up your Death Star at their final base!

Its a great game don't get me wrong but after playing it many times (and it does take hours and hours to complete) I have never once when playing as the Rebels or the Consortium had to face a Death Star or any other Super Weapon/Ship belonging to another Faction as the computer never sees fit to build them.

Personally the game was better as simply the Rebels and the Empire, there just isn't enough planets/resources to support all three factions and give each one a fighting chance, the tipping point I mentioned comes all too soon for one or both the computer controlled factions.

On the face of it, this game is a fantastic idea. Who wouldn't want a strategy game that allowed you to combine both space and land elements of the conflict into one real time strategy experience? Well, the execution of this idea has left something to be desired.

Having played this game (as well as several user created mods) for a long while now I would sum up the game as frustrating. My main problem with the game is actually the AI. I usually play as the Empire, as I like their units and heros better, so mainly fight the rebels. The AI on easy is pathetic, it doesn't do anything at all. You just stack up large fleets/armies and crush at will. On medium I found that spamming of units was rife, MC30 frigates and MPTLs being the main culprits. Obviously the creators decided to try and capture some of the irritant nature of th rebellion tactics from the films (ie small units delivering a punch above their weight). This does not translate well into this game.

Also, the system by which the game calculates what units are created seems to be weighted towards the computer players, as their fleets are automatically generated grab bags of whatever the PC thinks it wants rather than a realistically created fleet. For example, when the aforementioned spamming of MC30 frigates occurs, the rebels usually have few (or sometimes no) planets capable of creating them. Now, having built these things on other games I've got fair idea that they cost a lot, and they take ages to build, so how did the one planet that can build them make that many in 3 minutes? I don't know, but I still have to weather a million proton torpedoes.

This renders down the game into two opposing experiences;

1. On easy, a dull slogfest where you deploy the full force of your military machine against poorly defended worlds while a crippled AI makes basic and futile thrusts at your well supplied and defended worlds.

2. On medium/hard, a frustrating grind through massive and impossible enemy fleets and armies that cost far more than yours and reappear every other second. Certain units are spammed, mainly ones that use the most annoying weapons. Fighting a planet that has 26 MPTLs on the surface becomes the most boring thing in the world when you have done it about 30 times already.

Also, the jedi/sith are abysmally bad in combat. Palpatine is ok, but Vader kills one enemy trooper a minute in combat so is only really useful for his abilities. Luke Skywalker has the slowest attack buildup ever and units can simply walk away from him. Silri is the same. Urai Fen is ok though.

Overall, my problem with this game is that it COULD be a really good rendering of the Galactic Civil War, but only results in a sub-par strategy with serious AI and balancing issues. Nice try, but I am still waiting for the ultimate Star Wars experience to be released.

Fun:
If you like Real Time Strategy games this game has it all. Not only do you get to play Star Wars it has such variety from planet management to space battles. One thing I liked was the battles can be watched though a battlecam that switches between cameras. If you like RTS games and Star Wars this is a great game even though its geting old now.
