Amazon.co.uk Review

With the latest movie almost making up for the quality of the first two films it looks like Star Wars has won back the hearts and minds of fans everywhere and Battlefront II aims to be the perfect celebration of that. Like the original it’s a sort of Star Wars version of PC hit Battlefield 1942, where two armies face off against each other, either off or online, jumping in and out of various vehicles as they find them.

Of course in Battlefield 1942 "various vehicles" meant jeeps and tanks, in Battlefront II it means X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-ATs and, for the first time, Episode III vehicles like the BARC speeder, Jedi Starfighter II and V-wing.

The biggest change to the game, apart from the new vehicles, is space battles with several of the levels taking part aboard giant space cruisers which you can exit in starfighters, have a dogfight in deep space around and then pilot back to for a bit more on foot combat. Levels include the Blockade Runner from the beginning of A New Hope, the space battle above Coruscant and Utapau and Mustafa from Episode III.

Another long awaited addition is playable Jedi, although you can only be one for a short time so as to not unbalance the gameplay. Although the emphasis is on online play the single player mode has been beefed up with better artificial intelligence and a proper story linking all the missions. "Star Wars fans, like this, they will", as Yoda would say (if he was real and wrote game previews instead of being a Jedi Master). -- Harrison Dent

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

Product Description

A second helping of Battlefront provides all the same multiplayer action with an added level of spice, and plenty of new content. Along with an updated assortment of multiplayer maps based upon the Star Wars Saga, including Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, you now have the opportunity to fight as some of the greatest heroes, including the Skywalker family, Darth Vader, Yoda, The Emperor himself and Princess Leia, among others. An expanded single player campaign has you fighting as Vader's 501st Legion of troops, fighting in the Clone Wars as the undercurrent of evil, soon to be known as the Empire, takes its place in the Galaxy. Now you can also take to the stars in specially developed multiplayer levels where your skill in an X-Wing or TIE-Fighter come to the fore. Defeat enemy ships and destroy the heavy cruisers and capital ships to achieve victory, or land within enemy territory and blow up a Star Destroyer from the inside.

Upon seeing reviews, vid clips, screenshots, etc., I decided to purchase this game, and I wasn’t disappointed at all.
Don’t be fooled into believing Battlefront 2 is more suited towards multiplayer. Not only is there a large campaign mode, which follows a group of Clone Troopers all the way from the end of the Clone Wars up until Empire Strikes Back, but there’s also a strategic Conquer the Galaxy mode. In this mode, you choose which ever side you want: The Separatists, The Republic, The Empire or The Rebels, and move from planet to planet, invading and defending various territory. And although the core of the game is first/third person shooter ground missions, there are also plenty of intense space battles along the way.
And what happens when you complete all that? You still have plenty of mission points to gain for your player profile, which unlock special weapons and bonuses that you can use in battles.
To be honest, there’s not much I can find wrong with it. With the above modes it’s a decent length, the graphics aren’t bad, all the memorable characters and vehicles are there, the ground battles are very entertaining and the space battles are spectacular…well, aside from having to bomb an enemy command ship’s critical systems over and over to win most space battles, which can get a little tedious after a while. But even if you get bored of that, just fly into their hangar, run around their ship and bring them down from the inside.
Basically, this is a very well designed, entertaining game, whether you are a Star Wars fan or not. Not only is it huge, the bug testing, apart from a few minor things, must been pretty much spot on (which is a rarity these days).

5.0 out of 5 stars --The Force Is Strong With This One-- 6 Jan 2006
Having played StarWars Battlefront to death, I was very excited to hear of the sequel. However, I did not rush out to the shops due to some articles and reviews which gave the fantastic guys at Lucas Arts a bit of a hard time. Having then played the game at a friends house, I can now confirm the almightyness of this game.
There are new units and vehicles for each team to play with,
Graphics are great and fast even on an average PC,
Gameplay has much of the same but with more vehicle related parts what with the addition of space battles,
The life span of the game is great. An abundance of instant action maps (including new capture the flag and other such games), bigger galatic conquests and longer more testing missions.
Finally the online gameplay is just as good if not better. The Maps are bigger, more units to choose from.
Do not be scared by other reviews, THIS GAME IS GREAT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong with the force, this one is... 4 Dec 2005
By A Customer
I constantly see people who say that the graphics arent too impressive, and some of the space battles leave a bit to be desired, and jedi are stupid.
Well only some of this is true. Jedi are managed so any kills you get with jedi dont add to your total score, making them a bit of fun, rather than a fundimental gamepiece. Space battles are fun, laying seige to an enemy capital ship and dogfighting around. I agree that there could have been a bigger interior, but with the amount of turrets/people you have to get through makes it a bit fairer.
There is a good amount of maps and game types, and the community is very nice, if you teamkill someone and just say sorry they will forgive you, unlike Battlefield, where someone will start a petition to ban you forever even if it wasn't your fault.
Battlefront certainly doesn't belong to the darkside.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the Light Side, this is... 29 Dec 2005

WOW!
This game is miles beyond the last. Letting you play as Jedi is a fantastic addition to an already amazing game. Although, there a few glitches here and there, but you have to make exceptions...Anyway! This game really demonstrates the chaotic battles of the Star Wars universe but the Space Battles still leave much to be desired. In conclusion though this game rocks and is ace in all ways! (except the space bits) a must for all fans and non-fans alike!!

Firstly, by the time you read this review, gamespy's online support will be pretty much over, but you can download a patch. So technically, you will be able to play online.

But that's just the online play. The single player mode is also great and long-lasting. The maps are well the designed, the unit classes and weapons are well thought out, giving each class an advantage.

This is better than battlefront 1 for a few reasons:
-you can play as Jedi and Sith
-there are space battles
-there are other game modes [such as CTF]
-There is 1 extra unit class per faction
-improved Ai
-better vehicles

This game is almost ten years old now, but still great fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST EVER Star Wars Game 18 Oct 2009
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This took my breath away, literally. It is the BEST star wars game ever, let alone one of the greatest pc games for its time. And, yes i do know that i'm reviewing this game over 4 years after this release. I've been playing it at friends houses for a couple of years now, but never actually bought it because i only played multiplayer with my friends and never tried out the actual game. Let me tell you now, I wasn't dissapointed at all.

One of the problems i had buying this game now though, is because its now over 4 years old and needs a serial code to install, and if you don't get it new (which is hard to find these days) then your could be losing lots of money. So i can't stress this enough, don't buy this game from ebay. Most likely, it won't have the code and you will never be able to install it if you don't have, or get the code. (this is also why lots of people have rated this game 1 or 2 stars, because of this, the drm, and the dodgy installing process on some computers.)
But don't be put off. As i said earlier i had never played the game in single-player mode until i bought the game (new), and so was a bit tense on how good that would be, and, as you know, i wasn't dissapointed.

Its great! The storyline is long, fun and the little cutscenes breath life all the way through it, and yes it does have a decent storyline, unlike a few 1st-person shooters. The gameplay is addictive and instead of having to keep switching weapons and staying as the same boring character all the time, each trooper or droid has different weapons so you can play as the one you want to be, and if you get tired of that particular character with that particular gun, then when you die, respawn as a different character!
