THE STORY:
Luke Skywalker begins training the new generation of Jedi on Yavin 4, but from within their ranks will rise one who could well be the next Dark Lord. Elsewhere, following a tragic accident apparently caused by Admiral Ackbar, Leia travels to Mon Calamari to convince Ackbar to return to duty.
WHAT'S GOOD:
This book is definitely an improvement over the previous one, having storylines that are both interesting and exciting. The training of the Jedi was what I liked the most, particularly the slowly growing tension from certain students that heralds the return of Exar Kun. I enjoyed Mara's arrival at the academy too, showing that she has a desire to better herself, rather than simply being the acerbic and cynical hard-woman. One of the better elements of the book is the interplay between Han and Lando, revealing both the depth of their friendship and their tendency towards hostility with one another.
WHAT'S BAD:
Luke's shrugging off of Gantoris' attempted Mastercide (could be a real word...) is as ridiculous as the similar attempts in 'Jedi Search' were. I don't think even goody-goody Luke would be that forgiving. The other issue with the Jedi training storyline is that Luke teaches simply by regurgitating Yoda and Obi-Wan's lines from the films; I think Anderson could have given Luke a bit of wisdom of his own. Finally, and probably worst, Daala is a terrible villain. She has no deadly superweapon, she's not a Dark Jedi and she's not a genius like Thrawn. Daala is simply a largely incompetent Imperial officer and as such adds no real threat or urgency to the story (although Anderson has that worked out nicely in the far-better 'Darksaber').
