This DVD contains eight episodes of the 1985 'Star Wars: Droids' animated TV show. The episodes have been edited into two stories; 'The Pirates and the Prince' and 'Treasure of the Hidden Planet.' Both tales canonically occur between the movies 'Episode III: Revenge of the Sith' and 'Episode IV: A New Hope.' The stories contain numerous throw-away references to the live-action films. Even Boba Fett makes a guest appearance.
It is worth noting that the entire series of 'Droids' - which ran for thirteen half-hour episodes throughout '85 - has never been released in it's entirety on DVD or video. The feature-length episode 'The Great Heep', which was released on VHS, is sadly ommitted from this collection.
The animation is very dated and Derek Holt's electro-pop score is cloying and repetitive, but these retro 'Star Wars' stories are still good fun and aimed squarely at younger children. They are much lighter in tone than the current run of CG animated 'Clone Wars' adventures.
As with the two 'Ewoks' DVDs, 'Droids' is an interesting curio for older 'Star Wars' fans. Younger fans will probably find these stories quite diverting as well.
