A long time ago in galaxy far, far away a really quite good SF film, a sort of western in space, was launched. The special effects were pretty shoddy but it did have some quite good actors in it. And Mark Hammill. A second and third film that were actually the fifth and sixth films followed and they weren't quite so good but they were still quite fun (especially when the teddies got blasted by the Imperial stormtroopers). Then, the first, second and third films followed and they were actually fairly dreadful though by now the special effects were much better. And the actors were still better than average too. And Mark Hammill was too old to be in it plus his character hadn't been born yet so that was OK. A Gollancz parody was inevitable. And here it is. An epic told in six chapters. An epic of good versus evil. Of dark versus light. Of hairy co-pilots and green gurus. Of bizarre hair styles, steel bras and camp robots. An epic that starts in the middle. And that's the original!
About the Author
Adam Roberts is 39 and Reader in English at London University. His first novel, Salt, was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. He has also published a number of academic works on both 19th century poetry and SF.

Warped But Funny,

Return of The Jobbi
The imperial empire of the imperium suffered a terrible blow when their mighty death spa was destroyed by rebelend action but, being determined and, also, rather lacking in imagination they had immediately begun construction of a second death spa, even mightier and safer than the first. Really, very much safer, honestly. No chance of that exploding because, say, the main reactor is hit by a carefully aimed blast from a spaceship's main laser cannon. Dark Father was overseeing the project personally. By the way, I was going to mention, he escaped from the tumbling chaos and no one else did. No I can't be more specific than that. I just can't, I'm sorry. Meanwhile Hand Someman's paperweighted body sits atop a very large pile of papers pertaining to the business of notorious gangster pizza the hutt... Enough said...

This book is further proof that Adam Roberts should not write parodies. Adam, please. What the *&^%%&*%^$% is this?! Hardly any is funny. A few phrases stick with you but most is rushed and Adam is lazy. You can tell when he gets lazy because the book suddenly skips parts. Instead of describing a battle, instead the fool takes two *^$^^*&*%^&*^& lines to stay that the publisher is worried about the amount of words or some (**^&* *^(*&%. Adam tries to be funny but in some of his so called funny stuff, he bores us half to death with apparent funny explaining of words and arguements. I can't believe I spent money on this.
I'm sorry, Adam, if I've rained on your parade by giving scathing reviews, but &*^%*(^$^&&%^& hell, it's JUST NOT WITTY OR FUNNY ENOUGH TO MAKE ME LAUGH!!!!

It works,

A parody commentary and retelling of the Star Wars films. Quite amusing, both in its directly highlighting of absurdity from the films as well as positing its own more bizarre satire. Also benefits from a strong command of language, playing with elements of phrasing and effectively conveying voice. Beyond that there's not too much to say, I found it effective and enjoyable but intrinsically lightweight, and not really up to the level of sublime satire that Pratchett on occasion delivers. There's some nice meta stuff caused by Roberts' relabeling the Force "the Farce" and running with it, producing an environment where random falling and slapstick humor are the underlying mystical force. More generally the book works well at collapsing the absurdities, contradictions and poor reasoning in the original source material, and to that end works well but delivers little beyond comedy concerning Star Wars.
Insofar as there is a more sustained story or real coherence, it lies in two elements. 1. The continual playing up of the robots as far more intelligent, self-aware and resentful than in the original story, poising a type of challenge to the Lucas-defined limitations in intelligence and general creativity 2) the eventual revelation that the environment of the story isn't a unique universe, instead it's a virtual environment composed of pastiches of comedy and other science fiction. This forms a reasonably well-worked twist at the end, and points to the mixed and turbulent culture of mass-culture science fiction. 3 of 8 people found the following review helpful:

A.R.R.R. Roberts always writes funny parodies, but this one is especually good. and as always, its very clever without being too crude.
