Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Star Trek: Voyager, the first Trek spin-off to be made without any input at all from Gene Roddenberry, made its debut in 1995 and quickly established itself both as markedly different from cosmic cousin Deep Space Nine and as the successor to The Next Generation. Despite a lack of originality in its premise (Lost in Space anyone?), Voyager has been a bigger ratings success than any of its predecessors.

Catapulted unwittingly to the far-flung Delta Quadrant, the crew of the Federation vessel Voyager must try somehow to get back home. The ghost of Katherine Hepburn lives on in Kate Mulgrew's forceful Captain Janeway. Until the fourth season, the fan favourite was the straight-funny man role of Robert Picardo's nameless Doctor. Then, with the brave Borg storyline "Scorpion Part 2", a serious improvement in the show's behind-the-scenes thinking introduced actress Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, who immediately upped sex appeal and viewing numbers. --Paul Tonks

On this tape: Told in retrospect to the Borg children by Neelix, "The Haunting of Deck Twelve" involves Voyager enduring a complete power shut-down while passing through a nebula. "The Haunting" of course isn't a ghost but a non-corporeal-living-nebula-creature that manifests itself in a series of malfunctions throughout the ship. Like other "ship malfunction" stories it can't create enough drama to sustain an entire episode.

"Unimatrix Zero" takes another twist on Borg individuality by creating a "dream realm" for their individual minds to inhabit when regenerating. Seven of Nine infiltrates the group but the Borg aren't far behind. The use of the Borg Queen as the adversary devalues the collective quality that the Borg maintained throughout earlier episodes. It's familiar ground, especially when the last two-part Borg episode, "Dark Frontier", had already dealt with the Voyager crew invading the Borg and it seems that the majority of this episode is a build-up to the cliff-hanger final scene that ends the season. --Colin Neal

4.0 out of 5 stars A 16 Year Old Trekkies Thoughts, 25 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This video collection is superb and one of the best Star Trek Voyager has to offer, even if only for the second episode. The first episode, 'The Haunting Of Deck Twelve' leaves a lot to be desired but the story line does work well even if it is set up even when told as a story by the ships cook Neelix. It would have made better viewing if it were a full episode. It starts with Captain Janeway powering down the ship because it is about to enter a nebula. Neelix, who has one of his greatest roles in this episode, wakens the Borg children being held on Voyager and begins to tell them a story in an aim to calm them down. The story he tells is very good and would have made a brilliant full episode for the seventh series. The constant interruptions where the audience loose track of the story because they have to flick back to see what is happening on the ship is boring. 'The Haunting Of Deck Twelve' ends in the traditional boring, corny "the cosmos is at peace once again" Star Trek way. However this episode is really a bonus to the video collection because buying it for the second episode is good enough!

The second episode 'Unimatrix Zero' stands up against all previous episodes of Star Trek and could rank as one of the best series endings of all time. The special affects are lacking a little in comparison to series five's 'Dark Frontier' and 'Star Trek First Contact' but as with all good episodes of Star Trek, from the beginning the atmosphere was tense. Audiences were taken straight to the heart of the action - a Borg city in space. When Seven of Nine awakens from a "nap" in an uneasy state the tension heightens and the story line begins to evolve. Tom Paris' promotion adds excitement to the episode and this adds to the tension as well. Susanna Thompsons portrayal as the Borg queen easily matches up to Alice Krige in First Contact and the sense of evil when she is around keeps you on the edge of your seat. The traumatizing effect when the drone tears through Unimatrix Zero - a place where the Drones go during regeneration so they can exist as individuals - and the killing of old friends of sevens is disconcerting and well directed. The episode definitely comes out on top and the only thing I can find to fault is letting the audience know that the assimilation of some crewmembers is no accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool, Cool, Cool, Cool, Cool,, 24 Jan 2001

The haunting of deck twelve is a great episode on its own instead of being told as a story and keep having to flash back and forth. The ending is a bit tacky, but the suspence is great.

Unimatrix Zero, Cool or what, the whole plot is great and the effects are great but not as good as dark frontier. You litary know what will happen from the begining of the episode you see Borg City, then Janeway finds something out that has to do with the Borg and Janeway and CO go off and engages the Borg-This time a tad too far.
