Amazon.co.uk Review

In their sixth season trying to return to the Alpha Quadrant, the crew of Voyager continues to find signs that they may be close to home. They ran across another Federation starship in the season 5 cliffhanger, "Equinox," which is concluded in action-packed fashion. Then they benefit from a brief communications link to home thanks to the ongoing efforts of The Next Generation's Lt. Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz), occasionally assisted by Counsellor Troi (Marina Sirtis). "One Small Step" sets Voyager on the trail of NASA's first manned mission to Mars (one of the bonus features details Robert Picardo's post-Trek work with NASA).

In other episodes, Torres (Roxann Biggs-Dawson) tests the limits of Klingon honour ("Barge of the Dead"), Tuvok (Tim Russ) stretches his emotions ("Riddles), Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Kim (Garrett Wang) embark on a new holdeck program, wrestling superstar the Rock makes a gimmicky guest appearance ("Tsunakatse"), a former crew member returns ("Fury"), and the crew discovers a group of abandoned Borg children ("Collective"). The two most interesting characters continue to be the Doctor (Picardo) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). The former stretches out numerous times ("Tinker, Tailor, Doctor, Spy," "Virtuoso," "Life Line"), and we learn more about Seven's Borg past in "Survival Instinct" and the season closer, in which Seven discovers that during regeneration she can enter a dream world called Unimatrix Zero. There she meets a number of mutated Borg who can exist in this world in their pre-assimilation state and who also present an idea for destroying the collective from within. The Borg Queen, however, discovers the plan and ends the season in a nightmarish cliffhanger that recalls the great Next Gen episode "The Best of Both Worlds." --David Horiuchi

4.0 out of 5 stars Voyager's Sixth Season, 12 Mar 2009
By Andrew Kerr (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Star Trek Voyager is a science fiction television show that's based in the 24th century. This is the sixth out of seven seasons in the saga, and this boxed set contains all 26 episodes in the series.

Captain Kathryn Janeway, who is the commanding officer of the Federation Starship U.S.S. Voyager, must find a way home for her ship and crew, after they are transported against their will across the galaxy to the Delta Quadrant. Unless they find a short cut such as a wormhole, they face the prospect of spending seventy odd years traveling through unknown and often dangerous space.

It's safe to assume that I'm not only a sci-fi fan, but a fan of Star Trek and all its various incarnations (in particular Voyager). However, I do feel that this sixth season of Voyager is perhaps a bit weaker than others, especially when compared to its own previous fifth, and later seventh seasons. Don't get me wrong as season six has some brilliantly entertaining episodes such as the opening "Equinox Part 2," "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy," "The Voyager Conspiracy," and "The Haunting of Deck Twelve." But (for me at least) there were a few really disappointing episodes this time around. Such as "Spirit Folk" which was unoriginal and unimaginative. And "Alice" where a small ship has a mind of its own. But in general even other episodes seemed to be lacking that little bit of shine that we've come to expect. Thankfully however, the brilliant episodes I've mentioned really are good, and tend to make up for the other disappointments.

Highlights of this season include the holographic doctor being transported to the Alpha Quadrant once again (the first time being in the "Message in a Bottle" episode in season 4,) but this time around he is attempting to save the life his creator. Con artists exploit Voyager's name for their own personal gain. A former crew member returns full of anger and fury, with plans for Voyager's destruction. Seven of Nine also creates some interesting situations when she starts to see conspiracies everywhere. And finally the Pathfinder project sees Starfleet command contact Voyager, thanks to the help of "The Next Generations" Reg Barclay.

For me, one of the greatest things about Star Trek Voyager will always be the cast and the characters that they play. In the case of this show they are always in exceptional form, ensuring some very realistic and likeable crew members. Some good special effects have been put to use in this season, which further enhance the episodes.

While if you're not a fan of sci-fi or Star Trek, the chances are you won't really enjoy Voyager, but if you are a fan, then it's a great show to check out as it offers so much to the viewer.

Voyager really can be an involving program that you will grow to care about, but I would always recommend with any series based show starting at the beginning and working your way up to this point. While many episodes are shown on television stations, owning the boxed sets offer a number of advantages including being able to progress through the episodes at your own pace.

This series of Star Trek Voyager is really really good... There are also lots of special features at the end of the last disc - but be warned, if you haven't watched all of series 6 and 7 there are some big spoilers on the special features!

5.0 out of 5 stars STAR TREK VOYAGER SEASON 6, 27 Feb 2009

Fantastic. Was forced to buy the last 2 seasons of the wonderful show as Virgin 1 decided to be real mean and stop showing it.

Presentation cases are great and the menus are good and interact like spaceships.

Most of the DVDs have 4 episodes, 1 had 2 so they are split equally in the DVD box.

My favourite show, knocks spots off Deep Space Nine which was rubbish (The Ferengi were not credible characters) and Enterprise in the 2000's, well, it fell short of what it could have been.

This rules supreme in the Star Trek series.
