Manufacturer's Description

Star Trek: Tactical Assault is a real-time spaceship combat game for 1 or 2 players, featuring a wide array of authentic Star Trek races, ships, and weaponry from the universe of the original Star Trek series. Players take command of powerful Federation and Klingon warships and must outthink and out duel their opponents in order to succeed. Play through either the Federation or Klingon campaigns in single-player mode, or go head-to-head against a friend in wireless multiplayer action. Gameplay in Star Trek: Tactical Assault is about tactics, effective movement, and the use of your ship’s weapons and shields. Success in battle depends on balancing your precious energy resources efficiently between these three competing needs.

For the Federation, you are in command of a starship at the start of the Federation’s initial five-year mission. A devastating surprise attack by the Klingons leads to full-scale war. As the Federation’s Captain, your skills are needed to restore order in the universe. The Federation campaign is a story of responsibility and heroism. For the Klingons, you command an Empire where aggression is the only way to survive, but honour is more important than survival. However, there are some who are willing to betray the Empire and their families for personal gain.

Key Features:

  • Based on the films of The Original Series. Space is the final frontier, Kirk is in command, and the Klingons are the bad guys. Play through the era that started it all with this classic Star Trek game.
  • Real-time combat involving multiple warships. The true test of a Captain is his ability to act under fire. Every second counts as you attempt to out-manoeuvre enemy warships and expose their weaknesses while protecting your own.
  • Two full campaign modes. Become a hero of the Federation or a champion of the Klingon Empire in two full-length, independent campaigns.
  • Branching missions with multiple outcomes. You are in command. As Captain, it is up to you to make decisions for the good of your Empire. With a multitude of paths to choose from, you will decide the direction and ultimate outcome of your campaign.
  • Head-to-Head wireless multiplayer. Test your skills and tactics against the most challenging opponents you’ll find…your friends.
  • Five playable races. In Skirmish and Multiplayer modes, command ships from the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Gorn, and Orion fleets. Each fleet has its own combat philosophy, strengths, and weaknesses. Tactics that lead to victory for one race will result in disaster for another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red alert, all hands battle stations! 28 Jan. 2007

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
From past experience I know most Star Trek games can be quite difficult to master, but this one was so good my DS had to be confiscated to make me come off it! The game play is excellent, you can hail or scan ships, change alerts: red, yellow or green, and shoot klingons out of existence!

But most interesting is that when you hail a ship, what you choose to say will affect the outcome of a mission. If you are talking to a klingon bird of prey, you don't say "Can't we talk this over?" because the responce you get will be a volley of disrupters! Some missions are easy, others are very hard. However when you finish flying Federation ships, you move on to the klingon part of the game. (Much more fun!) Or if you can't wait, go into skirmish mode and anihilate three federation dreadnoughts, spending half your time cloaked. Anyone who loves strategy games and shoot em up's, should buy this game now!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't make it so 1 Mar. 2009
By Mr. D. Swan VINE VOICE
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
The idea of skooting through space commanding my own ship appeals to the Megalomaniac in me so I gave this a go and found it quite interesting but ultimately it falls short of being a worth while buy. Tactical Assaults main problem is it's hardness, even on the early missions you can only hope to scrap through by the skin of your teeth, later missions are just hair rippingly impossible, an earlier reviewer complained that enemy ships only fire at you, even if there are multiple targets about, he's right, for some reason you are enemy number 1 in the universe, I must have said something horrible to their mother because their not in the least interested in destroying anyone else. Some missions have extra bits to do for extra points but by that time your ship will be in no condition to take on any mission harder than getting a pint of milk from the corner shop.
It's a pity, it could have been fun but there's really no point in buying a game that you'll only ever see a fraction off because the difficulty is just too high.
A special mention has to go to the horrible ingame graphics, Oddly were treated to a rather beautiful real time enterprise in the games intro, only to be subjected to ugly badly designed ships in the game. The option screens however are fine, keeping in the style of Star Trek graphics and being pleasing to the eye.
So, Nearly good, too hard, ugly graphics, don't waste your cash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good... 14 Feb. 2007
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
I'm very impressed with this game. I read a few so-so reviews on other sites so I was hesitant at first but now I've bought it i'm glad I did.

The idea of the game is quite basic; You are a starship captain (either Federation or Klingon) and must fly your ship through space taking part in ship-to-ship space combat. Its great fun! You can either play in two campaigns (One Federation, the other Klingon) in which you pilot your ship through the solar system encountering other alien races and either resolving differences the diplomatic way or blasting them to bits....or there is also a 'skirmish' mode which essentially lets you get straight into the fight in which you can also command Romulan, Orion or Gorn ships of various classes (Destroyer, Frigate, Cruiser etc) the controls are tricky at first but quite easy to use once you get the gist of how the game works.

What I particularly like about the game is that it isn't just a typical mindless shoot-em-up like alot of other games. You can actually hail other ships in the area and choose what you wish to say. If you want to try and avoid a fight you can be charming or if you want to fight you can easily say the wrong thing and all hell breaks loose! As the game progresses you can upgrade your current ship or you can unlock new ones. All the classes of ship are accurate with regards to the Star Trek designs which is a big plus for Trekkies out there who own DS's. You cannot just fly into a fight and expect to win hands down you must use tactics and careful planning to win. Not only do you have to hit your enemy accurately to damage them you have to get through their shields first whilst preventing them from damaging your own shields too much.

I would say that the game could be improved in a few minor ways.

4.0 out of 5 stars Starfleet Command goes on a diet! 15 Feb. 2010
By Tim
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I was a bit wary of getting this after some pretty mediocre reviews. However I took the plunge and I'm glad I did. I remember being glued to Starfleet Command all those years ago. Tactical Assault is really Starfleet Command simplified, and squeezed onto a DS cartridge.

Yes I know, the plot is rather basic and the graphics are boarderline... but let's use our imagination here to fill in the gaps!

Without spoiling the story too much, you start off as a Starfleet officer fresh out of training. After a shake down cruise and some initial action to get you used to the mechanics, your flung in the midst of a war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. After two or three missions you progress in rank and get a heavier ship to command. Depending on your performance you also earn crew upgrade points which you can spend to upgrade things such as weapon damage and energy levels.

Although the storyline can be really predicatble at times, it still offers you a certain amount of choice. For instance, in the second mission you are asked by the director of a mining post to destroy some "rebels", you can agree and turn them to dust or you can hail them and ask why they are doing this... consequently you find out that they are working in inhumane conditions and bring their boss to justice after a little "resistance". Reminds me a bit of Bridge Commander in that respect.

I've finished the Federation campaign already, and have now unlocked the Klingon campaign. There is a noticeable jump in difficulty here, as the Klingon ships don't recharge their shields so you really do have to think about how to attack without exposing your hull to damage.

Would have liked the Fedation campaign to be a bit longer, its 15 missions long which may be enough for most.
