DVD Description

With HD DVD on one side of each disc and standard DVD on the other, the series has been remastered from the original camera negative. The 1960s special effects have been replaced with 21st century computer-generated imagery to give new depth and atmosphere to various elements including the main title sequence, the galaxy shots frequently seen from the Enterprise’s bridge, the battle scenes, planets and alien ships, some of the matte paintings used as backdrops for new worlds, as well as the Enterprise and other Starships, which have been replaced with CGI-created ships.

The new computer-generated Enterprise is based on the exact measurements of the original model (which now resides in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.). The original theme tune by Emmy Award-winning composer Alexander Courage has been re-recorded in digital stereo audio. A digitally remastered version of William Shatner’s classic original recording of the 38-word "Space, the final frontier…" monologue continues to open each episode.

    • Synopsis

    Going boldly where no man had gone before, Gene Roddenberry's cult phenomenon Star Trek debuted in 1966 and reflected that decade's optimistic preoccupation with space travel. Set in the 23rd century, the series chronicled the intergalactic adventures of the U.S.S. Enterprise on its five-year mission to explore the outer reaches of space. Encountering a now-iconic assembly of innovative alien life forms such as the Klingons, Romulans, Tribbles, and Khan Noonian Singh, the ship's jumpsuited crew was a then unheard-of font of multiculturism: Asian Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), African-American Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Scotsman Montgomery Scotty Scott (James Doohan). But it was the contrasting personalities of cooly logical Vulcan Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), emotionally intuitive medical officer Leonard Bones McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and womanizing ship captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner in definitive overacting mode) that lent the series much of its charm--and spawned a rabid cult following that continues to fuel costume sales and convention bookings to this very day. Presented here is every episode from the show's debut series.

    I finished watching the 'Enterprise' series yesterday - didn't see when on TV & have been watching over the last year or so - and after I had got over the shock of how that ended I slipped the first disk of this into my brand new HD DVD player. The quality makes it feel like the series was made in the recent past but 'The Man Trap' & 'Charlie X' soon reminded me of my discovery of Sci-Fi when I was a small boy in the 60's. It is a truly fantastic release based on what I have seen so far, with the improvements only enabling the series to stand the test of time in the 21st Century and enable it to be judged alongside the newer series. I empathise with those who think this series should not have been 'messed with' but believe the original will never be forgotten and that this will serve to bring its glory to younger generations today. Watch with an open mind and enjoy again.

    When i first heard they where remastering the original series for american tv syndication i was very sceptical, i had visions of a starwars like remastering where some shots look alot more advanced than the rest of the movie and become more of a distraction than actually helping the movie (i really hate the jumping Han over Jabas tail,we know its damaged film George). When i saw they had releasd the remasterd first season on dvd i started to get interested i read some reviews on amazon and took the £120.00 plunge (actually i put it on my christmas list and santa was kind). I have watched 7 episodes and i think they are wonderful the new footage has been done to perfection the ship and planet surfaces and planets now look really cool and actually add to the series things actually seem to flow better as you see a sweeping landscape then the set and they match up beautifuly, the shots of the ship are excellent and are not over the top. The picture qaulity is fatastic and i can only watch the standard side at the moment, the sound is not up to much but it is to be expected i supose. If you like the original series which if you are reading this you probably do then get this set its expensive but well worth it.

    So at last the remastered Trek episodes make it to British shores. After the debacle that was 'Enterprise' paramount had a big issue how do we make Trek popular again? Answers go back to your original source material and reboot! The original and the best Trek get a new lease of life. Remastered for HD transmission with all new special effects, this new tarted up 'Trek' does the business.

    In the USA of the remastered episodes have been a huge success updating the retro Trek for new audiences. Yes the polystyrene sets are still there, yes the rubber monster costumes are still there, but these have even been added too. In arena you will see the Gorn blink for example and in a certain scene in the 'Naked Time' the old 60's buttons and chronometer are replaced with new buttons and a digital display and you will see 'Where no man has gone before' as you have never seen it before.

    Thing was paramount have only realised that the remastered 'Trek' was hot property and got caught on the hop earlier this year when they had to change the remastered schedule from doing episodes across all the seasons to concentrating on the first season in order to get it out on DVD in time for xmas. The USA version of the first season will contain the episodes remastered for HD as well as the episodes in the standard format so non HD TV owners can enjoy. With the next Trek movie going back to the 23rd century for a reboot it may be time to boldly go again.
