Product Description

With HD DVD on one side of each disc and standard DVD on the other, the series has been remastered from the original camera negative. The 1960s special effects have been replaced with 21st century computer-generated imagery to give new depth and atmosphere to various elements including the main title sequence, the galaxy shots frequently seen from the Enterprise’s bridge, the battle scenes, planets and alien ships, some of the matte paintings used as backdrops for new worlds, as well as the Enterprise and other Starships, which have been replaced with CGI-created ships.

The new computer-generated Enterprise is based on the exact measurements of the original model (which now resides in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.). The original theme tune by Emmy Award-winning composer Alexander Courage has been re-recorded in digital stereo audio. A digitally remastered version of William Shatner’s classic original recording of the 38-word "Space, the final frontier…" monologue continues to open each episode.

Bonus HD DVD features

  • Starfleet Access – on-screen graphical interface allows viewers to access 'Picture in Picture' video commentaries, comparisons of remastered vs. original effects, encyclopedic information (science, life forms, technology), episode trivia and more on the following episodes:

    - The Menagerie, Part 2
    - Balance of Terror
    - The Galileo Seven

5.0 out of 5 stars The original and still the best 12 Sep 2004
    Format:DVD
It's easy to sneer at the original Star Trek today for its cliches and technical limitations, but this is the one that invented the cliches. It mined the very best ideas from screen and literary science fiction before it, added a great deal of inventiveness all its own, and presented us with the one series that subsequent TV science fiction owes the most to. Where today's writers of TV sci-fi often seem to limit their influences to other science fiction, the creators of the original Star Trek looked at the military and the science and technology of their own time, and the history and literature of seafaring and exploration, extrapolated into the future, and created something much further ahead of its predecessors than anything that has come along since. Most of the science that forms the backdrop to the series is either still plausible today, or indeed has been developed or surpassed. Not much about the USS Enterprise itself looks silly or naive today; a fantastic achievement for a show that entered development over 40 years ago.
This first season shows Star Trek getting into its stride from day one, and nearly all the episodes in this box are classics. Although the episodes are presented here in the rather arbitrary order of original broadcast, they are also numbered according to production order, giving you the option to view them as they were intended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why we continue to watch 22 July 2004
    Format:DVD
One of my earliest memories is being terrified of the puppet head in The Corbomite Maneuver during its first showing in the UK - I have been an unrepentant fan of the series and its spin-offs since then.

While at times the acting was hammy, the plots ridiculous, the special effects laughable, there is a sincerity to the writing that conveys Roddenberry's vision of a more-or-less Utopian future (certainly for the human race) better than the later franchises. What will be lost now is the daring quality that the show had when it was first released, with plot lines addressing relevant social issues, thinly disguised as SF and fooling only the censors. This sincerity gives the show its timeless quality, and the sometimes unsuccessful attempts to maintain these same standards have made the series, and the franchises that followed, watchable over its extended lifespan.

No comments on the technical aspects since the disks are on pre-order, but if you have even the remotest interest in Trek then the cleaned up episodes alone make the purchase price well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE NEEDS OF THE MANY...... 12 Feb 2008
    Format:HD DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I finished watching the 'Enterprise' series yesterday - didn't see when on TV & have been watching over the last year or so - and after I had got over the shock of how that ended I slipped the first disk of this into my brand new HD DVD player. The quality makes it feel like the series was made in the recent past but 'The Man Trap' & 'Charlie X' soon reminded me of my discovery of Sci-Fi when I was a small boy in the 60's. It is a truly fantastic release based on what I have seen so far, with the improvements only enabling the series to stand the test of time in the 21st Century and enable it to be judged alongside the newer series. I empathise with those who think this series should not have been 'messed with' but believe the original will never be forgotten and that this will serve to bring its glory to younger generations today. Watch with an open mind and enjoy again.
