Format: Paperback
The story running through the four-issue mini-series of `Star Trek - Nero' is collected as Star Trek : Nero. This fills in the gaps in the story of the first of the new Star Trek films. The `story' - but not the scripting of the comic - is provided by the writers of the film, and the art and scripting are excellent, and fit in with the tone of the film itself. The story starts with the aftermath of Captain George Kirk's attack on the Narada; the ship's capture by the Klingons; the long imprisonment of the crew on Rura Penthe while their ship slowly repairs itself - thanks to Borg technology - and Nero slowly develops his vestigial telepathic abilities. The ship eventually reawakens, the crew mutiny and escape, and Nero's telepathic abilities lead them to a meeting with V'ger - which in this timeline, hasn't visited Earth yet. A physicist recruited on Rura Penthe is able to calculate when Spock will arrive, and he is duly captured, harangued, and marooned on Delta Vega to watch the destruction of Vulcan, where the story then joins the film.

As I said above, the art and scripting are both excellent, and capture the tone of the film perfectly. This, like al of this current series of Star Trek comics, is not just a spin-off, but, thanks to the collaboration of the film's writers and producers, is an integral part of the story.

It is a shame that the star rating appears so low on this site (which may put off potential readers) as this is a beautifully illustrated GN which gives an added depth of character to the villain of JJ Abram's spectacular 2009 reboot of Star Trek [DVD]. All of the low reviews pertain to the poor formatting of the Kindle edition, which does not display GNs well in general and reduces colour to nondescript monochromatic dreariness.
I own the good old-fashioned paper-and-ink version and it is indeed a very good read, detailing the life of Nero in the two decades or so he spent out of his own timeline, and his motives for seeking such an absolute revenge on Spock.
So, to conclude, take no heed to the dire ratings awarded by some other reviews, other than stay away from the Kindle when it comes to enjoying a good graphic novel.

I would also highly recommend Star Trek: Countdown (Movie Prequel), which manages to bring in the cast of TNG and meshes the two series seamlessly in a gripping prequel to the movie which also ties in with the events of Star Trek: Nero.

Star Trek: Nero is a compilation of the 4 issue bridge between the events in the first rebooted Star Trek film. If you ever wondered what Nero got up too the destruction of the Kelvin, now's your chance, all in one easy volume.

The story is well written and the art style fits in perfectly with the style of the rebooted franchise. However, it is brief (4 comics into a graphic novel) so don't expect something along the lines of the walking dead compilations for size!

However, of most importance is the story, the dialogue is well written and as mentioned above the art work is excellent. It feels like a genuine extension of the film and answers questions fans of the movie may have.

Well worth a look.

Fans of the Star Trek Universe are just going to love this prequel graphic novel. With beautiful artwork and a tale that backs up the recent film it's going to be a worthy companion for all concerned. Add to the mix a story arc that really will set fans to warp factor six that gives greater depth to Nero alongside the run in with Spock with recogniseable actor characterisations and it really does hit all the right notes.
