Amazon.co.uk Review
Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise. Die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Age philosophy with a light-hearted plot for the Next Gen cast. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amok in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years.

It turns out there's a conspiracy afoot, masterminded by the devious, gruesomely aged Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, hamming it up under makeup resembling a cosmetic surgeon's worst nightmare), who's in cahoots with a renegade Starfleet admiral (Anthony Zerbe, in one of his final screen roles). They covet the fountain-of-youth power of the Ba'ku planet, but because their takeover plan violates Starfleet's Prime Directive of non-interference, it's up to Picard and crew to stop the scheme. Along the way, they all benefit from the metaphasic effect, which manifests itself as Worf's puberty (visible as a conspicuous case of Klingon acne), Picard's youthful romance with a Ba'ku woman (the lovely Donna Murphy), the touching though temporary return of Geordi's natural eyesight, and a moment when Troi asks Dr. Crusher if she's noticed that her "boobs are firming up".

Some fans scoffed at these humorous asides, but they're what make this Trek film as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs (including Data's rousing excerpt from Gilbert & Sullivan's HMS Pinafore), this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. As costar and director, Jonathan Frakes proves a capable carrier of the Star Trekflame--and it's nice to see women in their 40s portrayed as smart and sexy--but while this is surely an adequate Trek adventure, it doesn't quite rank with the best in the series. --Jeff Shannon

3.0 out of 5 stars One for Trekkers only, 30 May 2000
By A Customer
If you're a hardcore Trekker then this is a satisfying installment to the TNG film series. Better than Generations but not as exciting as First Contact. The 'green' leave them alone fountain of youth plot maybe a little slow for those looking for a bit of Sci Fi action. The title is a little misleading. All the regular cast are on board - Worf's attendance quickly explained with one of those 'well captain I just happen to be in the area ..' plot devices. Picard gets a little romance, Data finds new young friends, Geordie gets to see and the ladies firm up (you'll need to see the film for that one !). A Star Trek film that's really a stop gap for the next 'big' installment. As for the DVD (based on region 1) - all I can say is dreadful ! What a waste of the format. An opportunity missed ! A couple of trailers, a short featurette is all you get. Nothing really for Trekkers to get their teeth into. The makers should take a look at The Matrix DVD - that DVD 'boldly went where no DVD went before'

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh approach to big-screen Trek., 9 Sep 2000
By A Customer
If all Star Trek films were action-packed adventures, they would not have proved so popular. It's the variety that keeps things interesting.

If you want to see a follow-on from the Next Generation series, then watch Generations. If you want an all-out action film, First Contact is for you. But following on from First Contact this film made for a nice change of pace.

The reason I've given it only four stars has nothing to do with the plot or feel of the film. There is one scene during a battle sequence where a helicopter-style joystick is used by Commander Riker to pilot the Enterprise from the command seat, which kind of makes you wonder why the helmsman has such a complicated control board in front of him if a good old 20th century joystick is all that's needed.

As for this story being more like a big-budget series 2-parter, so what? Personally, I'd love to see the Next Generation 2-part episode 'Best Of Both Worlds' in uninterrupted widescreen format.

Keep the Treks coming and I'll look forward to number 10 sometime in 2001!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Generations, 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Star Trek: Insurrection is a movie with story, action and extra ordinary special effects (the Data's cloaked suit come to mind), but somehow the movie just doesn't seem to be as well as executed as the previous Next Generation outing, but certainly better than Generations. With that said, Insurrection is beatifully paced film with a pinch of humour here and there. The ninth Star Trek movie, unlike First Contact, is really only for Trek fans and plays mainly from the plot instead of the action and special effects (again, like First Contact). Because Star Trek: Insurrection isn't executed as well as First Contact, I give it 4 stars, beter luck next time!
