I've been a fan of this score for many years and owned the previous, now out of print, CD. Forget that previous disc, this new one is just astounding.
Here we have the complete score, now running to just over 75 minutes, in gloriously re-mastered sound. New tracks include: Kirk's shuttle flight, the full Genesis Project track by Craig Huxley, Captain Tyrell's Death, Enterprise attacks Reliant (the scene where the Reliant's engine gets blown off) and even Amazing Grace.
The tracks are presented in film sequence order but if you want to replicate the original album's track order, the liner notes tell you how to program that. So if you're a fan, there is no reason to hold on to the old GNP Crescendo album. No reason at all.
This is a fantastic score, one of the two outstanding Star Trek scores (the other being Goldsmith's The Motion Picture). Finally, it's been given the treatment it deserves.

This soundtrack is astounding. The quality of the music is top-notch and features all the tracks that you wish the original soundtrack release had on it. It's perfect! From the music to the CD cover itself. Definitely a fantastic addition any Star Trek fan's collection. Or even if you enjoy soundtracks in general, it's worth a listen.

Having wished and waited patiently for an expanded score for this film for years I never thought it would ever come - so as soon as I saw this was finally availble - and was a genuine release (unlike the bootleg version which has been about for some time) I immediatelty purchased it! Top marks to Rhino Entertainment/Retrograde Records and Screen Archives for this outstanding production.
All the music from the film is here, even an alternate ending "Epliogue" bonus track (scored before the final footage of Spock's coffin on Genesis was shot) and the often requested "Amazing Grace" and "Enterprise Attacks Reliant" - fantastic. The sound quality is spot on throughout and certainly a match for the original GNP 8 track CD release (if not better). The CD also comes with a pretty comprehensive booklet with some fantasic touches inside the jewel case too - like alternate poster art by Bob Peak.
I could go on about the film, each CD track and the merits of Horner's fantastic score but for most of you reading this I guess you already know you want this! just buy it! you will not be dissapointed.
In short, if you love Star Trek, the Wrath of Khan, James Horner or just good film soundtracks this is an essential purchase! 5/5 - all we need now is expanded scores for Star Trek's 3-10!! (Especially Star Trek 3, if the rights can be sorted - please, please, please!!!), The Motion Picture already having been released in expanded form in 1999 - albeit not complete.

Out with the old and in with the new! As with the "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks, the "expanded" version of the Wrath of Khan music renders all else redundant. Read more
